Hello! My first post on this board. Im a frequent poster on a couple of other forums, but I felt like joining a purely Guard forum seeing as my current 40k army I'm putting together is an Imperial Guard one: the Colossian Mechanised Infantry. I made the basic Colossian Troops from Catachan arms, legs, head & lasguns, and the Torsoes from the Tank Accesories sprue. I used greenstuff to make the Berets and rolled-up shirt sleeves. Here's a pic of the first squad I completed, I've two others nearly finished plus a platoon HQ: So, they're Mechanised, right - so where's the tanks? To mark their Chimeras as being 'Colossian Pattern', I performed a simple conversion, swapping the Chimera's Multilaser for the Heavy Bolter from the Heavy Weapons team sprue. Here's the finished result: another view: Lately, I've been working on some comms-operators (pictured here witha wip Grenade Launcher dude) - pre-greenstuff, obviously! I've also put together the Senior Officer's command squad: I'll post some more pics soon, as well as the regiment's background and the army list (although I'm retiscent to do that as I've had my army lists shot down by beardy-cheese freaks on occasion). Till then, enjoy!

Excellent work firestorm....The berets are definately a challange, but you have seemed to master it.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. I see that you are going to post some great stuff.

I love that head on the right side of the pic in the senior officer's command squad pic (the bottom one in your post) that's my all-time favorite bit I like your blend of catachan and cadian bits, they look really nice, and the greenstuffing for the rolled up sleeves on the beret guys is ACE. it really tones down one of the roughest spots on the cadian models: where the arms connect to the torso. very nice work with that, it's pro. also, I'll post a military beret pic thing..hold on let me grab my camera... k cool.. yeah so I was in the u.s. army as a desert warfare instructor before the US' return to iraq so we had these funky black berets with commie symbols on them (well we had US rank insignias) but it was before the rest of the army adopted wearing berets. at any rate, this beret is straight military beret style (as far as its sculpting) so if you wanna do an authentic military style beret then hopefully these pics can be of some help. the above one points out a feature your berets were missing, and below, shows how far the dip actually goes..i dunno what to call it other than dip, but yeah hope it helps as you sculpt berets! also notice the fold over on the front board thing of the beret.

um correct me if im wrong you have a british infantry company pin, a british navy pin, and a soviet star on your hat.
"ITS LIKE A RED SANDWICK WITH YELLING AND MORE PEOPLE DIE ;D ;D"
but i also like your scheme very cools.

I'm not sure about the origins of the gold crossed rifle infantry pin but I think it's soviet. we emulated 'motorized rifle batallions' which is the term for soviet mechanized companies. the pin on the left is my private first class rank stripes.
at any rate, the only intended effort was to aid in accurate beret design. hope the pic helps to that end!

Thanks all for your comments! Turtleboy, thanks especially for the pics of your Beret for reference. The reason they're plain at the moment is that I need to find a symbol to put on them, and I'm not that good at sculpting such small detail! I think I may well resort to cutting some skulls off the 'Guard insignia on Lasguns and using them.
Over the weekend I plan to make another Chimera or two, and hopefully I'll be getting some Ogryns. More pics will come when they're ready!

Hello, this weekend I made another Chimera - but I couldn't get any Ogryns, as the local GW stockist didn't have any... Anyway, in the meantime I thought I'd post a couple of pics showing how I made the Heavy Bolter conversion on the Chimeras. The first pic shows where I cut: And here it is. Note how a I forgot the peg which attaches it to the firing stand - this needs to be removed too, otherwise the turret won't turn... I'll post the background for the Colossian Regiment later this afternoon.

Okay, not too much progress to report on this army I'm afraid, I've been busy either working on projects for Epic or helping my Fiancee's kids paint their armies. But in the mean-time, here's a tutorial with pics showing how I made the Colssians' berets. Firstly, get a small ball of Green Stuff, like in the picture. Less than pea-sized is about right. Then, put it on the Guardsman's head and flatten it slightly. Then, making sure your finger is quite wet, drag it over the Green Stuff in the direction you want the Beret to hang. If you don't press too hard you avoid leaving too many finger prints. That's it - quite simple, but a bit time consuming when you have to do a platoon's worth! ;D

Hello again, well I'm afraid it's been a while since I've done anything to this army, mainly because I've been waiting to get the remaining 2 chimeras I need (finally arrived this week!) and the 4 Ogryns I need (still not in stock in local GW Stockist ) to finish the army. That, and I've started a Tyranid army... Anyway, to fill the gap I thought I'd post my walk-thru for sculpting rolled sleeves. This is a very basic guide as it is possible to put more details such as creases etc but I'm not that skilled I'm afraid! After cutting away the bulk of the Catachan shoulders, as they look a bit large on Cadian Tank crew Torsoes, I smooth green stuff over the shoulder up to where I want to later put the crease. As you can see in the pic below, some of the Catachan arms have pouches or straps on, and these make a good 'marker' for where to apply the Green Stuff too. As always, I make sure my fingertips are wet and gently smooth over to get out cress/thumbprints, and to merge the green stuff in with the torso. I then got a small sausage of Green Stuff and gently wrapped it round the arm at the point where I'd previously applied Green Stuff. Then with my sculpting tool I made some crease marks. As the pic below shows, I left the pouches as I thought they looked cool! So there you go. If I get some more Chimeras or Colossians made, I'll post pics as soon as I do. Till then, enjoy!

Ha, I would very much love to, Turtleboy - unfortunately I am currently painting some other stuff for another competition on another forum! Once I've done those I will get painting the Guard. On some better news, I have now ordered the remaining Ogryns I need to finish this army! ...well, I say finish: I tried to order Colonel Schaeffer to convert as the Officer of this army, but apparently GW are phasing this mini out so my webstore couldn't get it for me So I'm going to base my Lieutenant upon the 3rd Edition Storm Trooper Sergeant with bionic arm... but it'll be a couple of weeks before I'm able to order him!

I'm pretty sure I can get a schaffer model if you're ok with paying the shipping as well as the model cost. my local GW store has mass out of print guard stuff since I'm basically the only guard player in the area

Nice conversions.
Just a note on berets - not all berets are worn with a dip in the top. do a google picture search.

ah, I've never seen em worn any different in the military so I was just speaking from my experience. I'm sure you're right in your note that not all are worn in the style the US army uses
