Hey boys! just a little question. when you paint infantry,do you build/paint the whole 10 man squad? or build them all and paint a couple of the men of the squad at a time?. build all 20? I myself, build 4-5 troops at a time and paint them. your thoughts.....

Build 20, paint 10 in a week, paint 10 in the next week usually, although I have been going as fast as possible lately. I do it in sections, Ie, drubrush the armour, paint the fatigues, paint the camo and paint the face, one at a time over the whole squad. It works quite well.

i find it easier to build the whole squad, base coat them. then go through and skin them. then cloth then armour gun then rest of the detail and adding the hightlights to the flesh (if need be)

I just do whatever I can tolerate, sometimes all I paint is a pair of boots and a belt. sometimes I go for hours the effort is in keeping it fun so I want to keep growing the army it's nice to have a method though so you know your system for painting your guys - like my space wolves I paint them one at a time, they get 100% skill/artistry put into them. my cadians I use a trick on them, I just paint them in nice solid basic colors then do a 50/50 brown ink and water mixed coat slopped all over em and they turn out great! I know when I'm doing my cadians that they don't get eyeballs and details like that, they're 'tabletop quality' so I don't try to make them frickin masterpieces it's good to know what you expect as a result and tabletop quality can turn out really nice with a clever trick or two mixed in - so much so that I actually enjoy painting em more than my space wolves (lucky for my cadians!!) quick, easy, looks good - yep i can be satisfied with that - so from there it's just relaxing and enjoying the process. I do what I feel happy doing, as soon as I get that 'man I don't want to paint another damn flak jacket' feel, then I don't. I just paint a pair of boots or some lasgun stocks - whatever DOES feel fun. if nothing seems fun then I just put it up and go play elder scrolls oblivion

The good old production line is the best way to go i think for me. 1 squad at a time then 1 colour at a time.

My building and painting method:
1. Buy Models 2. Build/convert all models immediately. 3. Let sit for year. 4. Prepare to paint. 5. Get sidetracked 6. Never paint models.
When I do paint though, I paint anywhere from 5 to 60 at a time, assembly line style.

oh absolutely, thats what draws me to this game, the ability to create something so personal and unique not only through physical conversions but also through the painting techniques and colour choices etc for your army....and then...hopefully wiping the floor with any heretic that tries to oppose you

I used to paint them production line style, but i didn't find that much fun. Now i paint them one at a time and i love it. It takes a while but i'm happy with the end result and for me that's what it's all about.

I built most of my army first so I could use them (100+ men) Now I'm painting them a squad at a time.

battling with painted pieces is 50,210x more satisfying than battling with grey plastic in my opinion Thats why i spray them black.. now they are all scouts, and with eldar cloaks for better hiding and cover protection ;D Tha being said.. i usually put them all together, letting me add conversions where needed.. mostly when i get bored of putting them together i begin to "experiment" with assemblies.. then i base coat them.. let sit for a long time.. play a game ( rarely ).. and then get motivated to paint a few.. worse thing about my guard atm .. they are competing againest my slannesh chaos atm.. which i play heavily as the main bad guy in my local gaming club.. that and i hand paint my own decals.. again i say.. i will get pics up very soon and post the link to them as well..

I do the same, tends to thin out the number, so many guardsmen so little time.

I agree with you fuzziness.. You shouldn't play unless your army is painted and based. A badly painted army is better than a unpainted army.

I started out painting 20 men at a time (ala production que) and then went on to doing 5 men at a time just so I could spend a bit more time getting quality work. Something I’ve really learned with Cadian plastics is that you need to base paint them before assembling and gluing otherwise you will never be able to paint those hard to reach areas …say behind the gun, under the chin and behind the flamer etc.. I always start with a white undercoat as I find that lighter colours such as bleached bone don’t take well to a dark undercoat yet catchian green doesn’t seem to cair!!! I usually do one colour at a time but I’ve been known to wast a couple of drops from other tubs doing something during that one colour that bugs me like those white bits that poke out after the 8th layer of catchian green

I've tried the production line, but I can't sand it. I get to tried of the same color in the same places. I prefer doing a few at a time. It might be slower but it's more fun for me.
