The Death Korps of Krieg are from Forgeworld and they're resin models. There are no Steel Legion plastics minis till now, at least there are no on any GW page...

Hehe. I've ALWAYS wanted to do this. Lotsa commisars too, as the Soviet Red Army's commanders killed cowards to ensure discipline.

Yeah, too bad we're only allowed 5 in an army list. Maybe if I invented some sort of doctirine?

Stand fast comrades! If i see anyome run, i will shoot you! comissar with about 50 conscripts and the hardened veterans upgrade would give them a better chance, especially sloggin up the field under a hail of enemy fire

You could try making a commisar retinue of NKVD: the guys that do all the shooting of the cowards, maybe using the Hardened vets or stormtroopers. Another idea: Big red soviet banner that counts as a regimental banner, i mean how cool would that look on a battlefield. I found someone who made British WW1 style troops by mixing cadians with bretonian men at arms, and the look pretty authentic. maybe it would be worth GW bringing out convo kits (like £5-£10 a piece for 20 troops) that could be used with current plastic kits cant find the website, but heres a similar idea which could work to make russkies with great coats: www.dysartes.com/model/conversion/bloodpact.php

ive made a decent plastic great coat commissar from the baneblade kit, just repositioned the bolter arm, added a different right arm from the leman sprue, the one with the braided cord on the arm, and added green stuff to make an epaulet.
apprently there will be plastic trenchcoat guardsmen coming out in the future, so keep an eye out.

Yes!!! IT LIVESSSS!!! Ummh... Well, if your going modern, the soviets also used a designated marksman in every infantry squad, a man with a Dragunov SVD in every squad. So, light infantry! I mean, guard in general are based on the soviet army.

Good to hear that someone else goes with the poor Valhallans. Trust me, the effort and money spent in getting a full army of the greatcoat wearing guardsmen are well worth it. I myself got a 2000pts Infantry based army with only valhallans (and some converted mordians) which number up to 130-140 infantry models and 3 tanks. To bad... I have very little painted or even asembled. >_< I used to have before I felt like repainting them... And looking at 140 models and wonder where to start hurts. The light infantry doctrine works well aswell, though I don't like the light infantry feeling over the valhallans. I myself go with the doctorines stright from the book and uses every doctorine, I even spend those damned points to get Xeno fighters on them ;( If you go with light infantry for them, grab a few scopes from space marines and space marine scouts and get a regular guardsmen, just chop off the top part of the lasgun and flatten it down, glue the scope there and then make a slightly longer barrel. Works perfect. Best of luck!

Hmmm there is only one issue with that acording to the "What you see is what you get rule". If you plan to have a "real" standard bearer in the army the enemy might be a little cranky, aswell on tournaments. I don't know for 100% what they'll say, but I would be confused at least. Though if you plan to upgrade all your sergeants to a veteran sergeant AND buy trademark item for them maybe... But that isn't worth it ^^
