Hey all,
I've decided on having roman numerals as my different squad markings on the shoulder-pad.
I'm just wondering if anyone else had some cool ideas for squad markings. And pics would be sweet too ;D
Thanks

I use the 3 digit number codes on the IG decal sheet. I put the decal on their left shoulder AND on top of their helmets so I can look down at the battlefield and see what troops belong to what squad. it's not only clear but it's sneaky enough that your opponent doesn't know whats what since he's farther away on the other side of the table and not looking directly down on them. it seriously helps if you're trying to do something like say disguise a demo charge in a mass of guardsmen. some people like doing different color bases or something like that but that's too obvious for me, plus I like the number decal method for its good looks.

I'm doing an Inquisitorial Boarding Force, and I'm using the squad number decal on one shoulder, and then the Inquisitorial "I" on the other. I think the roman numerals will work great though.

I'm not using ID numbers. My troopers know what units they're a part of, they don't need to check every time they get dressed. Plus it's easier when you're packing/unpacking. As long as every unit gets the right number of bodies, it doesn't matter to me which ones they are.

Since I use tanks I tend to use designs for sqd labeling. I got this idea from being in the army. I am currently serving in Iraq on a personal security team and each of our trucks and crews have a particular logo. Mine is the Star Wars Galactic Empire logo. You can use the same idea on your infantry models, just try to make them simple since they will be small. Just my two cents.

I was thinking about something different last night and i come up with an idea that i want to try cause im not sure if it will work.
Barcodes..... Sort of like the thick line represents the number and however many thin lines come first that is their number.....I think ill have to do one up to explain it properly but that was my idea.

I generally use the decal numbers to designate squads, and then I paint a number on the other shoulder for platoon. For my armored fist I put a lightning bolt on the shoulder for mechanized infantry. Good idea, putting the squad number on the helmet. I might use that...

You can use this: Platoon alpha: command squad is marked with "A" 1st squad "A1" 2nd squad "A2" and so on Then you have Bravo platoon, Charlie platoon and so on.Or you can use "C" for your command platoon...

it's the military phonetic alphabet. like saying "I read you lima charley" is like saying "I read you LC" (loud and clear) though we always said "I read you lickin chickin"

I paint the bottom of the bases a certain colour. Squad one is blue, squad 2 is red etc. That way you know who goes where without your opponent knowing. I do this mainly because I don`t like transfers, and want to keep track of the squads when I put them away.

My army, the Aurelian Blood Hounds, are part of the Ordo Hereticus, and as such I imagine that they wouldn't really have set squads (given that they would be dying more than most and their squads would be constantly shifted around). Their right shoulder pads are red, and I've been trying to do a black hound on them, but free handing every shoulder pad is difficult to begin with, combined with the numbers...beyond tedious. So I think I'm going to save it for my Grenadiers.
For my other shoulder pad, I'm thinking of just putting an X on it. That way my opponent will think everyone is Squad Ten, not realizing that everyone is simply an ever changing variable!

I use greek letters for Company designation (colours represent the regiment)
the right shoulder pad displays the company (greek letter) and two dots on either side of the letter to indicate the company. 1 dot = first platoon, 2 dots, etc.
the left shoulder pad shows the squad markings. C for lieutenants, "stenciled-on" style numerals for squads.
I paint different coloured stripes on the helmets for different ranks. Red for sergeants and veterans, yellow for Lieutenants, broad yellow bisected by red for Captains.
Vehicle markings have the same basic scheme

My command squads have NKVD written in small letters on their left shoulder pad.

i use white and red lightning marks on both sides using no decals because one of my friends say they get damaged too easily. i use a roman numerals for my small space marine squad marked V lll with V as black and the numerals as red then black then yellow looks great hand painted. i use markings on my tanks following the red and white lightning scheme with various cadian karskin zig zagged lines to give it my armys look. if your going for a karskin army i always think that tau markings do the trick hand painted representing wiring of the carapace.
