I just had a thought!!!
What if squads each had a flag or standard of some kind? Like just for show, I dunno, I think it would be neat. Any thoughts on this?

For a Showcase army yeah. Like In a Cabinet
But if It was a Showcase like a Diorama, you need to think about the Practicality of it in real life Like, Would one Guardsmen really lug around all his Gear and a Standard?

Well I think it's not too unlikely that they would have one sorry soul in each squad that had to wounder around the battlefield with a standard. But in real life we don't have standards on the battlefield anylonger... But then again I think he didn't plan to equip a real life army with standards...

in 40k there are literally billions on billions of guardsmen in all shapes sizes colors and all that. just as there are guardsmen running around in tassled dress uniforms with spit shined reflective dress boots (mordains or whatever) there have got to be guard regiments that have squad or platoon level standard bearers. you could have a simpler banner type standard for squads and more ornate flag type standards for platoons - give the officer a trademark item to represent the enhanced effect of the standard or something.

Itd be kind of like the flag bit to stick on SM Sarges, and Bosspole for Orks

Sounds like a good idea of marking out the different squads.

it would make sense in a japanese themed army, the samurai used to wear little flags from their lords on their backs.

Now that would be sweet.... a oriental themed samurai IG army. Complete with curved samurai power swords and flag do-dads

You could use plasticard to make the flat armor sheets they wore and the face masks would look awesome. And you could make the conscripts Ashigaru, which were peasants, and you could make Oni(demon ogres) to be Ogryns. It would look really sweet.

back on topic of standards.. i think if you looked back in history to like the civil wars era of america they have some poor slob walking around with a flag, and another with drums/flute/instrument.. so it is possible that an IG force out there hasen't ever out grown that way of warfare and still have some poor smuck holding a huge flag.. and it would look cool to have 2 full platoons of infantry with each squad having a flag to represent their family maybe? or their squad motto/badge.. would look really cool..
as far as the asian army theme goes.. cool.. but should its own thread cause the ideas for it could span a couple of pages worth at least..
Cheers Gris

how about just a little gold or silver crest on a stick for each squad? A squad badge to go on the shoulder pad or put it on a staff on the sarge would be a good idea.
