Depends on what I use to decorate the base. My urban army with gravel has been painted codex grey, my high elves have got green bases, goblins have got brown bases, etc. I don't enjoy leaving those in the same colour. Painting the base's edges makes it stand out and makes for a more unified whole.

im with u moloney...i paint the top part of my base in desert gravel and leave the sides black...mine look cooler that way...if i had painted the sides...or done the sides in gravel...it would have looked as if every model was standing on a lump or sumthn

40k bases look better with black sides, but fantasy bases better with a colour matching to the terrain

Urban=Grey Desert=Black Earth=Brown It makes the model look nicer, like pancakes.

My bases are usually painted black, highlighted with dark grey, codex grey, fortress grey and white. Static grass (sometimes painted, sometimes not) or snow. The edge of the base I usually paint scorched brown.

I paint the edge of my bases with Calthan Brown. It works well with my desert scheme and adds an extra bit of colour to the model.
Try painting the edges of your bases with different colours to see what style you like. It would be easy to repaint them if you do not like the results.

I usually add stuff onto the base, like grenades or ammo pouches, skulls ect. just to make it look a little more fanceh. But yeah, colours make them look a tad more uniformed.

I generally texture the top of the base with sand, flock, grass, whatever, but I paint the edge f the bases to track squads. Makes it a little easier when they get clustered together on small boards or I have multiple squads on an objective to know who is who when it comes time to move.

I use loads of slate. it looks pretty good. I then paint it black and drybrush it with lots of dark grays and gradually lighten it to bleached bone. If it looks a little too bright I dull it down with very dark washes of chaos black and scorched brown. I paint the bases' edges with graveyard earth. I paint the names of the models on the edge of the base for some special guys like officers, sargents, stormtroopers etc. I then use static grass to finish the bases.

I do my bases well with goblin green on the edges, it makes the whole army look WAY better if you do good, uniform bases.

I like fully done models which means painted bases. I like even the sides to be painted.
by the way, pancakes ARE indeed good!
