I am just about to start my second Imperial Guard Army, the 666th Imperial Penal Legion 'Emperor's Helldogs'
Now all my command squads are Modians with black uniform and red trimmings of the Commistant Penal service, now im thinking of using plastic catachans and cadians but each two models are chained together (so its not easy to run away) also squad sergeants are gonna be based on last chancer models. Was wondering wat everyone else thinks or if they have any ideas?

Sounds great. I have always wanted to have a strongly themed army of guard, and yours sounds brilliant. Are you going to paint your basic guardsmen in the same colour scheme as your command squads?

Was thinking i might use some of the new empire fallagents as well, ther've got chains and a wild look. Also because not all penal legionares are ex-military the fallagents will also show non-military cons, these would come under conscript platoons, what everyone think?

That sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't assemble the guys as flagolents though. I would mix the kits. Cadian and catachan bits mixed in with these wild, crazy looking guys would definately give the army a strong theme. It you take the doctrine "warrior wepons" you could represent the close combat wepons with the flails and chains.

I`d also recommend looking at the old model range. GW produced loads of metal miniatures that represented various 'gangs'. Maybe, you could create one or two squads from those gangs to give each squad a different look while the squad members all looked fairly similar (the fluff could be endless with each squad formed from differing/rivalling gang members)

Hmmm, nice idea. Whenever I hear penal legion though I think of soviet Penal battalions. Hmm...What if you had commissars in your hqs just there to make sure there is no running awayedness. Give some of em prison uniforms? I dunno...sounds fun...

totally regarding chaining them together, that would be bad. one casualty would become 2 automatically cuz if one guy got shot the other couldn't make it to cover or advance or fall back. it'd essentially make for a military unit that stopped dead once it reached combat. note the dead part of the description you should definately get some tallarn models, they have like no armor - forgeworld does some nice ones too - if you want to lose the arab look just take a pair of clippers and take off the head and slap on whatever type o' head you want to use. good luck, sounds like a fun project. oh, and warrior weapons must be applied to all guard infantry if it's selected so it's probably not the way to go.

I think it would be the way to go. He is theming this army strongly and he isn't building the army so that it wins battles (Well, nobody collects guard to win battles!) and if he is, he can just get absouloutly loads of support squads and a heavy weapons platoon.

I have a convict legion army. It is fully converted using Catachans, Necromunda minis (including a few women), last chancers and I've ordered a box of the new flagellants to convert. My command squads are all Adeptus Arbites enforcers and I have lots of priests. I also have a squad of convict Ogryns converted from ogres. Good luck with your army! Looking forward to seeing it.

oooh... penal legion is a great conversion army, i havent done it myself but its one of those armies with endless possibilities
forgeworld do some good renegade ogryns, but that might not be what your looking for (and the renegade ones are about the same price as the normal 1s XD)

The soviet gulag troops were just less equiped than the standard troopers.

Sounds awesome. I think if you use all the ideas then it will turn out great. I once thought of doing it but decided to wait.
