Well, hi, everyone. First post here, and since I'm too tired to lurk and see if this sort of question has already been answered, I'm gonna be a n00b and make my own thread. Har-de-har.
I've just started an IG army. I've decided on a forest-world theme, since I love the large pine forests my Grandma lives among.
I've painted a squad and part of a 20-man conscript squad (bright orange, my meat-shields, er, Convicts.) I'm going to be doing my officers soon, and I'm stuck as to how to proceed.
The idea I had (warning, fluff ahead) is that the Officers all undergo a sort of hazing. Their planet, Volv 2 (yay originality) is home to a giant wolf-like creature they call the Noble Wolf (hence my regiment's name).
Anyway, to become an officer, you have to kill one of these things with nothing but a knife and your wits. Then you get to wear the pelt/skull as a badge of honor. Think Native American camouflage.
Here's where I'm stuck- how to I make the pelts/skulls?
Fake fur would look way too bulky. And if I put green stuff directly on the model, it'll look like the fur is actually growing out of them.
As for the skulls...::hyper-cerebral thrombosis!::
Halp!

hmm, I like this idea it seems really cool.
About the badges, the greenstuff might not look like the fur is growing out of them if you position and model it correctly and/or on the correct part of the uniform, maybe you could put a little bit of cut card around/behind the badge to show its not growing out of the guardsmen themselves, other than that im stumped, maybe others may have some ideas. ps: welcome to the forum.

It wouldn't really be a badge.
If you've ever seen "Dances With Wolves", the Sioux wear the entire wolf pelt as a way of scaring bison and herding them.
So, the skull/head would be attached the head/helmet, the forelimbs attached to the arms, and the rest left to hang free like a cape.
I'm probably being too complicated for a beginner, but the look just strikes me as something I'd want to fight with.

I've got a ton of extra space wolf back torso halves with the wolf pelts hanging off them. if you used greenstuff to attach the pelts to the shoulders of the model you might be able to get a really nice result. this'd give you the separation of the "cloak" from the back of the model that you were looking for but would require some greenstuffing proficiency to make the cloak tops.
the pelts are upside down, so the arms/paws are hanging down (as well as the head)
if you want I can post a pic so you can tell if it's what you want or not. let me know.
if it turns out you want the bits maybe we can work a trade - I need sandbag bits off the heavy weapon sprues.

You make your Grandma sound like a bear. It's a cool concept though, I can't be arsed to read everything that has been said already in this post and so I am sorry if i am repeating something someone else has said. Their is a Mordheim sprue with loads of wolf and bear pelts, this might be a good place to look for bitz. Fantasy Chaos warriors also have wolf and bear pelts......
