What is your opinion on the VDR Rules that came out in WD a few years ago?
I myself have done a few vehicles using these rules.

They first introduced the VDR in white dwarf. here is a link explaining them. www.warbozz.dk/warhr40k/VDR_Help.htmlThere was some slight revisions to these rules in a later WD. I will try to find the added rules for you.

The VDR rules first appeared in WD #251. Later in WD #256 they updated a few of the rules that were listed in the article in #251.

I'm not overly sure........... In theory it's great, but I am not sure about the points........ If they gave you the points it would be great F.E.
Skimmer............30 pts Turret mounted Heavy bolter....... 10 pts Armour value 14 ............ 30 pts etc.
But there's nothing, where are we suppose to get the points costs from? what's stopping people making a Land Raider with a dozen gattling mounted battle cannons and making it 20 pts. ?
(My local GW has a Land Raider with 8 lascannons attached! it's crazy!)

I didn't realize that the web page did not list the points cost. Unfortunately I cannot write up the VDR article as it is close to 20 pages and I currently don't have the time to take on such an task. Your best chance would be to find the 2 WD's that the VDR rules appear in. I also think that you can find the complete VDR info in the Chapter Approved book that came out.

At our club we use our own VDR vehicles. We have a point limit and a weapons limit which is usefull as one Tau player thought he could use a custom made mantra with eight rail guns. Personnely i find VDR vehicles fun to play with, its only bad when power players take advantage of the rules.

I enjoy the VDR for the chance to create custom vehicles. I tend to make the vehicle first and then try and figure out how the rules will apply.

personnaly think there great without them what would be the point of converstions i've got hellhound with a hull mounted las cannon and a exterminator with multi-melta side sponsons as long as you account for the points fairly ie" take cost of a hull mounted las cannon from a russ and apply it to the hell hound",so far ive never encountered any one that has not allowed it.

I was looking for these earlier. Looking at that Cheetah Jeep from that link makes me want one. looks great even if it would be fluffy for my army. But whats the deal on using these rules? Would a gw shop laugh at me thinking I could use such a jeep if I got a copy of the whole vehicle making rules? I already know my 2 main opponents, if given the option of "can I take this vehicle" will always say no just to laugh at me.

A prinicple rule with anything that's not gospel: Get your opponent's permission. VDR doesn't sit well with many people anymore. The most extreme thing i've seen as far as the VDRs is a Chimera with a lascannon in it's turret instead of a multi-laser. Something like that doesn't bother people much but a sentinel with armour 14 'round, quad-linked lascannons and fleet* isn't gonna get many opponents.

The VDR is fun in my opinion, you can create your own vehicule (remaining fluffy is thye best I think!!) For example, you are a drop trooper, you need a heavy dropship, here we go! You want a mole transport, let's have it and so on.... But I'm not keen on guys who seek the-vehicule-of-the-death-able-to-crush-everything....That's not in the spirit of the game.

Using the vdr to make vehicles that are unbalanced with the game is pointless and stupid but I guess the problem is where do you draw the line on what is over powered? For example some might say that a chimera with a lascannon isn't in the codex for a reason. Then again if they lose at least they have something to blame "no wonder I lost, he played with an illegal army".
An official vdr codex that has been very well thought out would be a great addition to 40k but its probably hard to do and people do like knowing that they have learnt about the oppositions options in their codex and so can be prepared. vdr would ruin it allowing all sorts of surprising vehicles to crop up.

My current VDR project is a light tank type skimmer. It will be for fire support. It's got 1 twin linked heavy bolter, and 2 twin linked autocannons. All i have left to model is the autocannons and some armour.
