I've never like the ratling models that the Guard have. So, I'll be using Cadian and Catachan Snipers as my "count-as-Ratlings", basically making them a Scout/Sniper Cadre. So far, its not too bad. I plan to give them ghilly suits of some kind, or at least make their cammo capes "ghilly" like. All units will have a small amount of conversion work done. and will be painted in a similar style to Marbo. I added kneepads too the Cadian models. and Ankle Guards for the Catachan Snipers, in an effort to tie them all together. Here is the first model. Somehow, during casting, the Las Gun (Sniper Variant) has become warped, and I am at a loss on how to fix it. Just have to deal, I guess! I found another rifle like that that has been warped weirdly. It will keep... I had to give this guy a Cammo Cape, just to fit in! Once painted, I think it will be okay. This was an easy conversion, I think. I removed the Orc Skull the Sniper was using, and substituted one of the many. mamy loos helmets we all seem to have. And here is the Cadre, all together. I really like the look of the Space Marine Scout sniper rifles, so I added some silencer baffles to my sniper rifles as well. I used a coffee stir stick, fit perfectly on the ends of the Sniper rifle varients, effectively turning it into a Long Las. Tell me what you think: I was looking at my Sniper / Scout Cadre, and I realized they did not look especially stealthy, so with the help of some medical gauze, water, and PVA glue, I was able to make a "ghilly cloak". I love the texture that I have achieved, and with some paint and a few reeds stuck here and there, they will be complete.

Nice conversion work. I too dislike the ratlings and was thinking of doing something similar based on real world sniper teams. I would suggest you have a couple of spotters in the unit, holding binos and pointing out targets. If you still have the sniper rifle at their feet or on the base somewhere no one can argue that they can still be a fully firing figure.

These are looking good. I green stuffed ghillie cloaks for my Catachan snipers, and it wound up looking good. I like your use of the gauze--I use it for camo netting on my vehicles.
It's a shame about the warped rifles though. If you had contacted GW's customer service (assuming you got them through mail order) or taken them back to your local GW and shown them the problem, GW most likely would have replaced them for free...

Unfortunately, there is not a GW in Minneapolis... I got these at my local gamestore, Dreamers. I'm not worried about it, just disappointed in myself for not noticing it in the blister pack first!
Spotters is a really good idea, actually. I'll see what I can do from the Cadian Command Squad. The more I think on it, the more I like it.
I have ordered a Scope figure from an English friend, and I was hoping to find a Mad Larkin figure somewhere without having to resort to buying the Gaunt's Ghost set from GW. If anyone has a Larkin, please let me know.

Loving the baffles!
I can't see there being a huge problem using these as Ratlings - there's obviously the issue regarding their stats being different, but this only really effects their close combat effectiveness. It's always best to use models you prefer wherever possible, and if you prefer these over Ratlings, go for it!

These have turned out even better than i was expecting. The gauze looks very convincing and I love how you based them. What did you use to make the long grass?

i have a similar issue with the cadian barrels and am going to add "silencers" like you thanks for the idea You are welcome. In addition to using a coffee stir stick, I also filled in the stick with grey stuff (similar to green stuff), then used the end of a pen to push in the end to give it depth, and make it look like a gun barrel. Otherwise, the mouth of your gun is HUGE. These have turned out even better than i was expecting. The gauze looks very convincing and I love how you based them. What did you use to make the long grass? Well, I used kitty litter for the rocks and stones. The long grass is twine from a hay bale. I cut off about 1/4 ", holding it in one of my hands so it stays together. Then used a large dollop of super glue, glued the grass where I wanted it, and spread it out. The superglue will soak up into the twine, making it stiff, and still holds it to the base. Adding static grass just helps with the look in my opinion, especially on the ghillie cloak.

New addition to the Scout / Sniper Cadre.... I acquired the "Scope" model from Col. Gravis, and he arrived today. I used grey stuff to give him kneepads and shin guards to match the other snipers, and gave him his standard ghillie cloak and baffle for his Long Las. The more I look at these Sniper models, the more I am glad I didn't go with actual Ratlings. This gives my force a bit more variety.

The 'grey stuff' looks a lot like blue tac. Doesn't happen to be the same thing being sneaky under another name does it?

I don't see any logs or boulders, so I assume it was fresh kitty litter. Just be sure to keep your models away from the cats!

I have it in a small container, so I can dip away, and the cat can't have an accident. ;D The 'grey stuff' looks a lot like blue tac. Doesn't happen to be the same thing being sneaky under another name does it? Another board asks the same thing, but I assure you, Greystuff is NOT bluetac, though they look similar. You use greystuff exactly the same way as greenstuff. I was able to paint this model extremely quickly. I think it took all of an hour and half? It helped that most of the model is covered in a cloak, I suppose. I'll be working on "spotters" next.

Looking good! If you ever want another Scope model, let me know, since I've got him kicking around in my bitz box.

Thanks, but I think I'm good. My plan is to not have a duplicate model in the cadre. I'll have to convert the rest, I think. Now, if someone has a Larkin model they want to part with... Here is the next model for the Cadre. I used bitz from the Cadian Command Squad, which includes a cape and sniper rifle. I experimented with a Marine Scout head, and will paint it like its a new version of a pair of night goggles. The hood of the ghillie cloak was "sculpted" with a piece of gauze. He has a map in hand, and is looking around to get his bearing. He is also a Scout, after all!

I like it! However, don't you have the lens bit for the SM Scout goggles?

I like it! However, don't you have the lens bit for the SM Scout goggles? I did, but if you look closely on my Rough Rider conversion, you will see that I used it as part of the control panel of the bike. The goggles I have on him now can be considered a new kind of night vision goggles then! I don't know why I can't stop making these sniper models. I think its because they are so easy to make, and then painting is literally an hour, tops. Here is a "spotter" model, he has his binoculars in hand, and his sniper rifle close by. Here are a couple WIP pics. I decided to make the sniper rifle, but had an epiphany. Instead of using a nail, like I did the last time I made sniper rifles (for a platoon squad), I used part of the cage from a Sentinel, the one that is for the Scout version. Its long and straight, and after I cut off the barrel and drill a small hole into the gun stock, I was able to use my Testors liquid cement for plastic models and glue the barrel into place. Then I added a Greenstuff filled baffle and stuck it on the end of the barrel. Viola! (gah... I just noticed I had forgotten to give him knee pads. Too late now!) I'll make one more, and my final one will be the Larkin Model, should I ever locate him. I may have to break down and get it off of Ebay or something. Its been mentioned that the sniper baffles were a bit long. I think I was inspired by sniper baffles like this one.
