I wanted to do something a little different from the theme I been going for the last few years and take advantage of the updated drop troops list from FW by making a RAF Regiment style force.
Uniforms are to be based off of the current USAF issue ABU pattern
40th Air Commando Wing “The Flying Lions”
Overview:
The Air Commando Wing was first created when the Departmento Munitorum combined the under-strength 123rd Angelos Sky Troopers with several under-strength units of Navy Armsmen. These units were created with the objective to secure and defend air fields for use by Imperial Navy Aircraft Wings under administration by the Imperial Navy. Because of this the Air Commando wings are only allowed light vehicles and anything heavier than a Chimera is not avaliable. Each Air Commando Wing is considered special operations capable due to their mission of taking and holding strategic objectives. In order to support the Air Commando Wings there are several squadrons of Imperial aircraft attached to the wing at all times to provide mobility and close air support. In addition each Air Commando wing has an attached Combat Search and Rescue Squadron and a Special Tactics Squadron which is made up of Imperial Special Forces operators most of them coming from the ranks of the Imperial Storm Troopers and Imperial Navy Commandos. Stemming from the traditions created during the initial trial periods of the Air Commando Wing concept each member of an Air Commando unit is given a rank based on the Angelos Sky Troopers with every member of the unit being able to be addressed as Airman. In addition the Wing’s commander and vice commander are given the ranks of Wing Commander and Vice Wing Commander respectively and are considered equivalents to Imperial Guard general officers and Imperial Navy flag officers.
History of the 40th Air Commando Wing:
Found late in M.41 on Kasr Sonnen in the Cadian system with the remnants of the 21st Cadian Drop Troop Regiment, the 421st Naval Provost Marshal Battalion, and the 532nd Naval Armsmen Battalion. An administration error has caused the 21st Cadian Drop Troop Regiment to remain on Dempartmento Munitorum records leaving the Wing to receive more than the usual allotment of reinforcements and supplies much to the surprise of the Cadians assigned to the unit. Ironically despite being founded in the Cadian system and staffed by Imperial Navy pilots the flight operations squadrons do not use standard Imperial pattern air lift instead using Synford-pattern helicopter transports and gunships. This has its own advantages and disadvantages being that these aircraft perform better than their standard Imperial equivalents, the Valkyrie and Vulture, in hovering over the battlefield at the cost of decreased range and speed. This gives the 40th Air Commandos an edge in CSAR missions over other Imperial Forces in the accuracy of their helicopter gunships CAS missions. As a relatively new formation the Wing does not have any battle honors of note from recent actions but has inherited a number of battle honors from previous foundings.
Recruitment: Replacements are nominally drawn from the Navy’s Provost Marshalls and Armsmen but thanks to an administration error a number of Cadians are often shipped to the Wing by mistake.
Tactics:
Air Commando Wings are essentially air assault regiments with organic air support assets. They are also capable of executing grav-chute jumps from both high and low altitudes. Once on the ground they are either establish a secure area to establish an air base or seize a previously built one and provide security and base defense for the field. The Air Commandos form a vital link between the Naval Armsmen and other Naval Infantry assets and Imperial Guard Drop Troops and Marine units. Despite the word commando being in the unit name these troops rarely perform special operations missions but when called upon are capable of executing these missions with skill and professionalism. To support these operations there are two groups of Commandos within each wing that are specially trained to support these difficult missions.
The Arnold Society:
Named after its founder Maj. Henry Arnold, 2nd Air Commando Wing, these are an elite group of Airmen specially trained and tested in the art of light infantry and reconnaissance work. They are selected after a ruling three month Candidate period involving weekly night, navigation, and leadership exercises. The best marksmen in an Air Commando Wing will inevitably be Arnold Society members.
Honor Guard:
True to their name the Honor Guard provide the personal guard to both VIPs and their own officers. Every commando squad in the Wing is staffed by Honor Guard Airmen and many officers go through Honor Guard training. While not as grueling in terms of field work, compared to the Arnold Society, Honor Guard stress teamwork and camaraderie above all else as well as expert leadership and professionalism. Honor Guard trainees also go through a three month long trainee period where they are taught and mentored by senior Honor Guard members on the skills they need to perform their duties as an Honor Guardsmen. Upon completion of their training Honor Guardsmen are given a black beret as a symbol of their status.
Origins of “Flying Lions”:
The nickname, “The Flying Lions” comes from a previous founding. During the Battle for Thebs IV the 40th Air Commandos performed admirably and was awarded the Order of the Sphinx by the planetary governor for their valor. The Wing Commander ordered that the Wing paint the symbol on their aircraft and adopt it as the Wing’s symbol. Upon their next deployment other Imperial Forces misinterpreted the sphinx as a winged lion and this the 40th Air Commandos will forever be known as the Flying Lions.
Equipment:
The 40th Air Commando Wing uses Cadian pattern helmets and armo. Most notably is the use of a customized version of the standard Cadian-issue lasgun which has the addition of a retractable spiked bayonet installed on the weapon. The dress uniform of the regiment is a medium blue pants and jacket with a light blue shirt. Combat uniform is a sage green, grey-green, and tan tiger stripe pattern uniform with sage green boots, tan armor, and sage green gloves.

The CSAR Squadron and Special Tactics Squadron provide teams of specialists to support the rest of the wing in action and are not assigned into specific detachments.
