OK, so yea, I know about the Death Corps ones by FW, and no, I will not spend the $$$ on those, I enjoy a challenge, the modelling aspect of the hobby, and despite playing GW, have a reputation as a cheap bastard to maintain...
So with that window closed, I am looking to convert three Basilisks into *basically* the same thing. So getting the Basilisk models themselves is better than getting just the Earthshaker sprues, it will get me all the bits I need for both the gun and the vehicle with the exception of the wheels and the support/arms that splay out.
This is still the concept stage (have not even bought the models yet - going for the Basilisk Battery Boxed set) and I am casting the net wide looking for anyone out there that may have done this or seen it done and could advise.

I think it is advisable to have a look around for some suitable toys. I'm sure you will come across a suitable canditate for a conversion soon enough. Make sure it's the right size though.
Good luck, remember to post pics.

Just so we're clear, are you talking about the Krieg ones or the regualr imperial ones on platforms?

I'm talking about taking the Basilisk and converting the earthshaker part it into a towed piece (set up for firing, not in an actual towed-position.) NOT making into a platform one, because that is too static - need the hint of mobility that having a mover nearby.

hmm..
Well, what you can try doing is this: Build the platform (not ataching it to the chimera, of course) then building up a platform on the bottom. stick on axles then some wheels. Add a large towing hook on to the wheel base.
give it a shot

Been thinking along those same lines, myles, I was just was fishing here in the forum to see if anyone else had actually already DONE it and get some advice on what they used, what they found easy to do and/or what was more of a challenge to figure out a solution to, etc...
I know I want to already have all the pieces in hand before I even start, no half-completed conversions that, "oh-get around to it when I find xxxxx."
I know it's only been four days, but clock is ticking and the Basilisks will be bought soon; I may have to reconcile that I'm on my own, here.
So it IS time to look around at suitable 1/48 scale howitzers or other toys that can provide the wheels and towing arms...
And since this is apparently a new thing, I will do a tutorial and provide piccys and such for the next guy...

Someone did a similar conversion and tutorial a few weeks ago. He built a giant missile launcher. I don't know what they are called, it looked a bit like a SCUD.
I think it is time to buy a suitable airfix kit ot something along those lines to do your conversion.

O lordy, a SCUD! That would be nifty..... I even have a 3-year old 1/48 scale Iraqi SCUD kit that has been lying around unbuilt - an idea for another project at another time, maybe... I'll have to take a more critical look through the forums to locate that tutorial you mention.
