I have started a Rough Rider project for Cadians using motorcycles instead of horses. Here is the progress I'll be taking from start to finish, which will be 13 Rough Riders (9 riders, 2 Flamers, and 2 meltas for optimal coverage in any Rough Riders setup) and a Mogul Kamir special character riding a quad vehicle of some kind. I'm never like horses in 40k, its hard to imagine that they would have a place among all of that machinery on the battlefield, especially amoung the Imperial Guard. I've always had in the back of my mind a unit of Cadian Rough Riders roaring onto the battlefield on motorcyles. Here is what I have come up with then. I've looked at many different sites trying to find the perfect look, but in the end I decided to use the Space Marine Scout Bike, with some minor modifications. Comments and critiques appreciated. My first thought at this time was that I needed to need to cut down the lance, it looks a little too long. The lasgun had already been removed, and replaced with a large Close Combat knife, as Rough Riders don't have Las Rifles.

As a model ornament the lasgun looks quite cool, as if it was part of a set amount of gear for some guys who were likely to be detached from the main force for awhile, sorry to hear it got the chop.
Where did the legs come from?

I just ordered 5 scout bikes from a bitz dealer to make a small unit of rough riders myself. I'm going to try to slim the bikes down a bit to make them look more like dirt bikes. I'm interested to know what you did for the legs as well.

They are the Scout biker legs, and they fit our torsos perfectly. I used this Rough Rider tutorial when I was trimming down the bike. I think one of the best things about this conversion is all the bitz we get (heads, knives, grenades, stowage gear, etc). I'll be using on the scout bike heads for my Mogul Kamir model.

A view of the motorcylce without the rider. I've added a windshield made from a Vitaminwater waterbottle. It's the right thickness, its clear, and has the right curvature I need. This was a rough draft, and the positioning is held by bluetac. Obviously, this was the last part I did on the model, otherwise painting would be a chore! I also shortened the lance. The motorcycle has been pinned down, and angled to give it the impression of speed. A closer look at the windshield, and the combat knife. The holstered las gun looked too bulky there. And finally, some details on the controls. Can anyone tell me what I used? Later, I added the glass bead for a counter-weight, as the shortened lance didn't look exactly right. I also shortened the wire, so that it looked less "floppy", then tethered it down with a coffee stir stick.

The bits on the control panel are as follows.... the two dots and dash taken from a Las Gun, on the other side of the gun. Usually obscured from view. This will be a power indicator. The two lights to the left of the targeting screen the night vision goggles bit from the Marine Scout Bike spruethe toggle switches above the dot-dot-dash the very butt end of a Las GunAnd here is the completed rough rider, as requested from a different thread. I really love the "bug-shield", and how the model has turned out in general. I added a curved spacer where the shield was to give it so more visible support. Its going to be some months before I have a full 10 + Mogul Kamir painted and built, but in the end I think it will be worth it.

Pax, your rough riders are awesome - as I've come to expect from your painting . Well done! They also seem to be inspiring others to make rather groovy pieces too - bravo pirate!

Thank you, General. I appreciate it.
Dreadpirate, that is an AWESOME rough rider! I love the wheels the most, that really slimmed down the Scout bike. What did you do?

Thanks Pax! I owe it to you, though. If I hadn't seen how awesome yours looked, I wouldn't have bothered to try.
I used a belt sander to thin the wheels and bike. I clipped the parts off the sprue and sanded a couple of millimeters off the inside of both halves of the bike and wheels.

Just a note to others out there, if you want to show your Cadian Rough Riders on motorcycles, feel free to post here.
Dreadpirate! Where's the hunting lance? I just realized you are missing it.

Pax, I'm not yet sure if I'm going to model the hunting lances or not. I was thinking about using melta bombs or something as a stand in. I haven't come up with an idea that I'm crazy about yet, though.

Wow! All of these conversions are looking fantastic! I may have to re-evaluate my idea of doing Segway Rough Riders for my Catachans, and have a shot at doing bikers instead...

Wow I thought the scout bikes would be over sized to guardsmen but it fits perfectly looking at your pics!
