I am officially enrolled in my first tournament (Melbourne in Flames – in two months). I’m not going into this with an intent to win anything, I just want to have a decent time. As a result I’ve tried to make a competent list of units and models that I like:
CCS w/ Power Fist, Standard and Lascannon
5x Storm Troopers w/ 2x Meltagun
Infantry Platoon:
PCS w/ 3x Flamer
Infantry Squad w/ Heavy Bolter
Infantry Squad w/ Heavy Bolter
Infantry Squad w/ Heavy Bolter
Infantry Squad w/ Heavy Bolter
Infantry Squad w/ Heavy Bolter
Heavy Weapon Squad w/ 3x Mortar
Heavy Weapon Squad w/ 3x Autocannon
Heavy Weapon Squad w/ 3x Lascannon
Veteran Squad w/ 2x Plasmagun, 1x Meltagun and Harker
Devildog w/ Heavy Flamer
Armoured Sentinel w/ Multilaser
Salamander w/ Autocannon and Heavy Bolter
Leman Russ Vanquisher w/ Lascannon
Griffon w/ Heavy Flamer
Earthshaker Weapons Platform
Total: 1505
It is lacking AP2/3 weapons, severely lacks mobility and has more easy kill points than seems sensible, but I like its feel. I’ll work out the 5 points over at some stage.
This started as a conglomerate of things I like, but it developed a loose theme of a real-ish infantry platoon. There are the standard infantry squads with all the different support elements (scouts, support weapons, heavy infantry, heavy vehicles, artillery, etc).
Forge World is allowed in Melbourne in Flames.
As a quick breakdown on my choices:
- I get the most out of my CCSs when I use them in a supporting role. The regimental standard is a real game changer, and my power fist CO is just cool
- My custom glory boys with their bull-pup hellguns are too cool to leave behind.
- I built this list around the 5 infantry squads with heavy bolter. I just think this list is so quintessentially Guard.
- The melta and 2 plasma vets have been a favourite unit for the past 4-5 years. Harker is a new addition (replacing plasma pistol sarge), but being able to infiltrate again is brilliant.
- The armoured sentinel is great for tar-pitting, and the free-floating multilaser is just useful
- My T34 devildog is effective, a big distraction and looks cool
- The Salamander has always been a favourite unit, even if it doesn’t do much
- My Tiger Vanq is just too cool to leave behind, I just love it
- Griffins are one of the most effective and underrated units in the game
- My Blitzen 88 Earthshaker platform looks great, complements the Tiger Vanq, and is rather effective
I’ve considered dropping the Salamander and Earthshaker platform for a basilisk (using the 88 still). It would be more durable and more “regular”, and would save me the 5 points I need.
I’m interested to hear what you all have to say on the composition of this list in a tournament context. Will it be smeared all over the floor, or is it if for a show? Thoughts, suggestions and alterations would be appreciated.
