I looked through the threads and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, but if this is already somewhere please don't bring the Impirium's wrath upon me. I was wondering if any of you guys painted uniforms different based on the troopers rank or specialty. Everyone I play with does the same as I do and I was just wondering how many others do?
I go codex gray for stand. uniforms with black armor and either OD green or Gunship gray for shin guards, their eagles are gold and belt buckles are silver. Sgts are the same except they have have red stripes on their pant legs(as all my officer's do). Any officers in between sgt and FieldMarshall wear OD green uniforms with gold belt buckles. My snipers were camoflauge and have little of any thing shiny. My specialists wear black uniforms. My civil protectors(riot cops) wear standard uniforms except on their shoulder pads and helmets they have random lines of orange, light green, and white. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Rank???you mean besides my high born aristocratic officers I have to give the general troops rank?
Crap. That is going to play havoc with my payroll. Thank goodness they only have a 15 hour life expectancy.
I usually designate my officers, but considering the circumstances of how easily guardsmen die in combat I don't usually pay the points for squad sergeants.

Hey, it is your army, paint it as you wish. I can see the value for quick ID on the playing field.
The SM's I play only have Vet. Sgt's painted up differently - and at that only the bare head or helmet. The Reclusiarch squad supporting my Chaplain (normally I have my HQ all alone, but there are occassions when I field a squad) are done differently using Dark Angels Robed figures... thought it appropriate for a Chaplain's squad.
For the IG army I am putting together, I am trying to go unit-for-unit based on an actual USMC Battalion Landing Team, so all the uniforms are the same; but the Stormtroopers (Recon element) has gold eagles on their chest (close enough to the gold jump wings that para-qualified guys get in the USMC), and one squad of Hardened Vets are going to be in Medium Green flightsuits and kitted out as the real life door-knockers and ship-boarders.

I have small differences between troop types to distinguish them. My conscripts have no imperial eagles and no webbing on their uniforms. My basic troops have silver eagles, webbing and shoulder identification numbers while my veterans have golden imperial eagles, webbing, identification numbers and rucksacks. Fluff wise it works well for me as the vets will be fitter so they`ll carry the most amount of equipment.

Yes, troopers have different colours in my army.
Storm tropers have a glossy, brown greatcoat, (made to look like leather) Also have red cuffs and collars. They have grey fatigues underneath. They have glossy black carapace armour and helmets.
Normal troopers and runts have plain grey greatcoats, fatigues. They don't have the red cuffs and collars, Veteran sergeants do. They have the same glossy black armour.
There is a bit of variation in the officers' greatcoats but everything else is the same.
Anywho, that's what my guys look like.

Thanks for the responses, my guardsmen tend to live longer than 15 hours though(One of my favorite books) so they get good gear. Except for night vision, no one ever gets night vision.

For my part, I do not differenciate my troops by uniforms (except if they are part of a different corps like imperial navy). I follow the real world army doctrine: specialists and so on are differents ony by badges.
I put differents markings according to rank or speciality: I put aquilas on vet sergeants and lieutenants (white for sarge, sylver for officers), laurel and skull for senior officers, red stripe on the left shoulderpad for veterans (sergeants included), white stripe (with red for vet) at the back of the helmet, yellow for junior officers and yellow pls red for senior officers. Fore the medic, I'm working on it, maybe a red cross or the "caduce": the serpent enlacing a pole with wings...
Hope this could help!

I use small differences in color when painting high rank officers like the HQ My regular guards use shadow grey their cloth and catachan green for their flack armour. On the imperial eagle, they have gold. I make my HQ from the guardsman you get from vehicle, the tank commander, and put on a chaos cape from Warhammer Fantasy. (but no one ever have noticed that, so you can't call me heretic. Much) Anyhow, made a regular guardsman in the HQ choice so that he looked exactley like the real HQ, and painted him with much gold, and stuff. And the real HQ i painted white. every decoration on him is white. When you look at them, the real commander looks like the one with gold. Best sniper protection ever!

I usually have vet sarges with peaked caps(from the tank sprue) or with a commlink on their helmets(again, the tank sprue), or karkin models are good standins for vet sarges.
Other than that I usually add a medal or two to the old flak jacket.
