Seems like the release of the SciFi Greatcoats by Wargames Factory satisfied everyone. Is that the case?
If not, what did you find lacking?
What else would you like to have seen done that wasn't?

Hmmm...no responses. Well, nevertheless, I have just begun the design phase of my own version of Greatcoats.
What I would like from people here is some specifics about what they want to see and what they don't want.
Some concept art is currently being started for a new attempt at some Greatcoats and I will post what I can for some feedback. I'll also be posting some polls to get opinions as well.
Feel free to leave whatever ideas or feedback you might have, whether general or detailed.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing more from you.

Not a fan of that particular version of Greatcoats. Happy to look at the concept art.

Honestly, theres so little variety in a great coat that it's hard to have an opinion on them. The wargames factory ones were acceptable as I am sure any others will be.

I'm not too fussed about great coats to be honest, flak armour will do for me!

I'm not a fan of those scifi greatcoats. I think it is because they just look out of place next to GW models. If you could make some guys and girls who are the same proportions as cadian models I would be interested. I know they are not the most accurate models, what with large hands and head, but the two just look odd next to each other and I prefer the GW ones.
Also, female figures who don't fall into the "ultra sexy super boobs" catagory, just some normal looking women who happen to be soldiers. That is not something you see too much of. I don't think many companies (if any) do female greatcoats simply because they would be covered up.

Something about the arms and weapons just wasn't right on the wargames factory greatcoats. For me to buy it there has to be a solid supply, good uniformity with lots of different possible poses and lots of head choices. Good quality plastic is also important - kits made by Revell and other manufacturers are sometimes brittle.

The WF sculpts were, frankly, crap, and I told the (then) owners as much. Their hands are giant and ugly, the arm poses were stilted, the bodies were poorly shaped, the weapons were ugly and the heads were the godawful bastard offspring of some unholy union between a helghast and a headcrab.
What I look for is:
Either 30mm with reasonably bulky arms, hands, heads - not as bad as GW but at a reasonable level - sort of compatible with a guardsman. A relatively simple-looking automatic rifle or laser rifle, quite chunky but not ridiculously so.
Another excellent idea is to make conversion arms for non-GW models that around proper 28mm scale. Honestly, if you're going to produce alternate models for 40K, you might as well not make the same horrible, grotesque heroic-scale crap that GW does. Arm/weapon sets that are usable with Victrix, Warlord Games, Wargames Factory and other models and models that are usable with those kind of models is frankly, a better idea, followed by some genuine 28mm science fiction infantry.

So I have an early sketch of what I am shooting for. Feel free to offer your opinions. What you like, what you think should be changed. I make no promises that I follow your suggestions but all will be considered. Let me also state for the record that, at this time, my intention is to pursue this as a personal project. This is out of respect for this forum and it's rules. Attachments:

That is a crisp and modern look. I like the shoulder sheath. The coat seems a little short, it could use a couple inches of length. Maybe make it go past the knees by an inch or so?

Nice. I would probably put the holster further around the side but that is ust how I like them. Another grenade, some spare magazines and thicker boot soles (not too much, just some tread and heel) would probably look good.

So here is the final concept I'm going with. I'll point out that the knife, grenade, etc. are for context. They won't be sculpted into the mini. The plan is to make these in resin once I get the sculpts/molds done. Anyone know of a good sculptor? Attachments:

So I have a preview of some poses I have been working on. There are 3 "advancing" poses and 3 "firing" poses. There are still of some refinements to be done but feel free to give feedback. The blurry parts are just low-renders to show the position of the pieces. Any feedback is welcomed. Attachments:

They look awesome. However, some of the hand positioning looks a little off, mainly top right and bottom middle. Is there any way to put the weapon in their grasp so their hands are in the right position?

Walrus: They do line up. These poses have been created by taking the various body parts, arms, legs, etc. and piecing them together, just like you would with real bits. In those examples, the arms are just not lined up perfectly because the arm was not rotated enough. Hope that makes sense.

Nice drawing. The problem with greatcoats is that it almost automatically means it'll be a Steel Legion esque look.

The problem with greatcoats is that it almost automatically means it'll be a Steel Legion esque look. In a general sense, I agree. But apart from the actual coat there aren't that many details that remind me of Steel Legion. While this definitely has a specific vibe, my larger goal is to cast some alternate heads and add some variety. I'll also be trying some different weapons as well. More to Syphon's point, the greatcoat concept could certainly stand to be taken in a different direction. Something reminiscent of The Matrix or Dune maybe. That might be a project for a later day. Thanks for your comments
