BATTLE REPORT:
First fight with the 39th today, and we came out victorious!
Showed up at my local GW looking for my first game, waited around for a bit while the store manager finished up his match, and was going to play me after. Someone else popped in before they finished, who also happened to be a new player, so we threw down.
Note: I'm not exactly new myself, but I haven't played in three years, and it was my first game as Guard ever, so its close enough.
My opponent only had 1000 points, so I shaved some off my list and we ended up with:
Athonians -
Straken w/CCS, 3x melta, 2x bodyguard, regimental standard, chimera with hull heavy flamer
Priest w/Eviscerator (attached to Straken's squad)
Marbo
Penal Legion squad
Veterans, 3x melta 6x shotgun, sgt with powerfist, chimera with hull heavy flamer
Rough Riders x8
Scout Sentinels x2 with autocannons
Leman Russ Battle Tank w/hull lascannon
985 pts.
Opponent's Marines -
Captain with Power Fist
Dreadnought with multi-melta
10 man tactical squad with flamer, razorback with las/plas
5 man tactical squad, sgt with meltabombs, razorback with las/plas
Predator with heavy bolter sponsons
Vindicator with storm bolter
Vindicator with storm bolter
990 pts
It seems to me that his list was pretty far from optimized, but since we were both new, no big deal. As for mission, we just went with a basic annihilation scenario, nothing special, normal deployment, no objectives, to keep it simple
We rolled for deployment, he won, so I put down first. Rolled up for the penal legion and got a 4, so they had furious charge, fleet, and counter-attack. Long story short, I deployed my Russ and two Chimeras on the left side of the board, with the rough riders hiding behind. Marbo, sentinels, and penal legion went into reserve. My opponent had his two vindicators lined up on the left side opposite my forces, his two razorbacks in the middle behind a large piece of blocking terrain, his predator on the far right, and the dread with a squad of marines on foot covering the predator's flank. Rolled up for the turn, he went first.
TURN 1:
My opponent moves up his predator and one of the razorbacks at full speed around the big ruin, and the dread and tac squad trundle up beside them. One of his vindicators moves up 12 to get into a firing position, only exposing his front armor to me. The other vindi stays back to discourage me from getting too close. Second razorback holds back as well. No shooting from him, the one vindi moved 12 and other was out of range, and the predator and razorback moved 12 as well.
I'm up, time to get busy. I fear no vindicators, and move full bore towards the enemy. The chimera with the meltavets moves up the left flank towards the rear vindicator, and pops smoke. The CCS chimera moves 12 towards the close vindicator, and they disembark. 3 Meltaguns barely within 12 inch range, so no 2d6 pen, but we're gonna give it a shot. Successfully ordered them to bring it down by Straken, and all 3 hit. 2, 3 and 5, one glancing hit. Okay, at least it wont shoot me. 6 comes up on the chart. -2 for glancing, +1 for AP1, boom! Vindi becomes a smoking wreck. Russ fires the battlecannon at the other vindi in the back, and beginning what would be a long chain of wide scattering shots, completely misses. Lascannon shot goes wide as well. My rough riders start to move along my board edge towards the right side to intercept his other forces.
TURN 2:
My opponent moves his vindicator up 6" towards the closest chimera which had popped smoke. The predator and one razorback speed up 12 again, getting in position for side shots at my armor. The dread and tac marines trundle up the flank, slowly closing on my right. The other razorback moves around to the left of the main ruin on his side, positioning for a shot against my chimeras. His remaining vindicator fires on my chimera, and scatters one inch, a direct hit. Penetrates with a 4, but smoke saves the day, and the chimera emerges unscathed. His one razorback fires and misses. The dread and foot squad run, now halfway across the board towards my lines.
I roll for my reserves, Marbo and the sentinels aren't ready to come out yet, but the penal legion emerges from the right board edge right behind his tac squad and dreadnought. I move my meltavets up 6" towards the vindicator and disembark, again within 12 but not 6 of their target. Straken's squad re-embark in their chimera which then zooms 12" to the right, towards the advancing predator, razorback, and other marine junk. The Russ trundles up beside, and the rough riders carefully go around some terrain on my own side, looking like they won't do much this game. The meltavets fire, no orders this time, but they get lucky and blow the demolisher cannon clear off. Straken's chimera pops smoke, and the Russ takes another wild shot, this time at the predator, coming nowhere close. The rough riders fleet, rolling a 2, and slowly creep forwards. After some debating about what to do with the penal legion, I decide to rapid fire their lasguns at the tac squad, and they do surprisingly well, killing two of the 5.
TURN 3:
My opponent is starting to sweat, his two big guns already taken out of commission. He move the predator up 8 inches, turning to face my chimera and Russ head on. His razorback scoots up behind the predator, hiding from my sights. The tac squad and dread turn towards the penal legion, ready to make them pay. His razoback in the back backs up a bit, but still keeps in LOS to fire off at my vets' chimera. TANK SHOCK! His weaponless vindicator moves full speed at my veterans in a last ditch attempt to secure the left side of the board, but in a death or glory move one of my brave knights stops the vindicator in its tracks just inches away. The marines fire their pistols at the penal legion, killing two, and the dread fires his multi melta and misses. His storm bolter kills one more. His razorback in the rear fires, and toasts the vets' chimera. With no ride and no enemies in sight, theyre pretty much done for the game stranded on the left side of the board, but they did their job. The marines and dread then charge in on the penal legionnaires, who charge right back thanks to their counterattack. The combat, of course, does not go well for the penal legion, with four more of them dying, but thanks to their stubborn nature they hold fast and the marines are stuck there for another round.
I'm up, and roll for reserves. Marbo pops up behind the razorback in the rear, but the sentinels are still lost. The rough riders move again towards the right flank, trying to at least see one fight before the end of the game, which is fine since they're only good for one charge in the first place. The veterans move around the second wrecked vindi, just in case that razorback in the back makes a move for their side. Straken's ride moves up 12. The Russ moves 6" and readies the battlecannon for a shot on the two lined up tanks. BOOM! Marbo tosses his demo charge at the razorback's rear from the safety of cover, and it only scatters 1 inch, a direct hit that wrecks it and causes his marines to disembark. BOOM! The Russ finally connects with its target. A battlecannon shot aimed at the predator's front scatters 5" directly behind it, scoring a direct hit on the razorback and blowing the turret off. The s4 hit on the rear of the predator bounces off, but the lascannon shot manages to stun it. The rough riders fleet again, and roll a 3, still slowly creeping towards their glorious charge. In combat, the penal legionnaires continue to martyr themselves, down to the last two men, but they still hold thanks to stubborn.
TURN 4:
The marines are on the ropes, and the remaining razorback cautiously backs up towards the nearby side edge. The marines in the back move towards Marbo, flamer at the ready to fry him. One wound from the searing flames, and then another from the rapid firing bolters takes Marbo down, but his mission was accomplished. In assault, the penal legion is finished off, and the marines and dreadnought consolidate towards Straken's oncoming chimera.
The sentinels finally arrive! ...on the left side of the board. They move towards the other side as fast as they can, hoping that their autocannons can get off at least one volley. The vets stay put, and Straken's squad dismounts, moving up right in front of the stunned predator. Their chimera heads towards my opponents edge where the marine squad in the back awaits. The rough riders continue their arduous journey, the predator now between them and the only thing they might be able to charge. In the shooting phase, the Russ fires off another shot at the razorback, but it scatters way off, and the lascannon simply misses. Using bring it down, Straken's squad turns the predator to slag, and then turns to face the oncoming marine squad and dreadnought. Their chimera's multilaser turns on the dreadnought, but does nothing. Straken and co. charge the 3 marines, and with the rerolls from the priest they are taken out in short order. One of his bodyguards takes an armored fist to the face on Straken's behalf, and is knocked out of the fight. They consolidate 2 inches towards the dread and razorback.
TURN 5:
The tac squad in the remaining razorback disembarks, and moves towards Straken's unit. I am about to learn about the fragility of guard infantry first hand. The dread moves up, but turns towards the chimera. The tac squad in the back moves into cover over Marbo's charred corpse. The multimelta on the dreadnought fires at the chimera, but misses. The tac squad, however, has more success. The lead marine levels his flamer, and Straken's squad is torched. The other bodyguard, two meltagunners, and the priest meet a fiery death. The marines then charge in, killing the two guardsmen and putting a wound on the bossman. He strikes back in fury, killing two.
My sentinels move up, and fire their autocannons across the board at the dread, doing nothing. The rough riders move around the back of the wrecked predator, and the chimera moves up towards the marines in the rear in cover. The heavy flamer fries one marine, and then the Russ turns its guns on them, killing two more. The rough riders fleet, and are finally in position to charge the tac squad tied up with Straken. Chaaaaarge, they speed in, although only two actually make it into the combat, and they kill one of the remaining marines, while Straken kills another. The sergeant decides that a tactical retreat is in order, and hightails it out of there.
Game over, my opponent is left with one sergeant, a gunless razorback, half a tac squad and a dread. A solid victory for me, and I learned a lot about what works and what doesn't. Its one thing to mathhammer the squads on my computer, but seeing them in action really helped me figure out what I'm doing. The penal legion did very well, tying up the enemy for a few rounds. I now see what people are talking about with Marbo, in that he blows something up and then promptly dies. Hopefully next time I get a bigger game where I can try out the power blob, and I'll remember to take pictures for you all as well!
