Hi all,
I've been thinking about starting a cultist/guard army for a while now, but I've finally decided to get on and do it. They're going to be based on the cadian models with some chaos marauder horsemen and FW stuff thrown in. But I can't decide on a colour scheme. I was thinking of black or dark grey armour, but I can't decide what to do for the cloth. Perhaps a lighter grey, or maybe a brown or purple. What do you guys think?

Well, with chaos guard, there can be infinite variety... I would recommend starting with a bit of planning and/or fluff.
Who do they fight for? What god do they serve, if any? Things like this can greatly influence your decisions.

They represent both the fanatical cult militia and the disiplined army of Chaos warlor Kal-kizzar, (just thought of the name, it will probably change). They're undivided but are fanatical soldiers particulary fearsome in hand to hand combat. They're reknowned for they're beserkers, warriors so charged on the powers of chaos that they are all but uncontrollable.
I was thinking of vets for the trained army, in deep red, black and gold/brass with the militia semi uniformed with a darker colour scheme, mainly blacks and greys with red on the officers, (who are attached from the main army). Enforcers, (commissars) would be in their to oversee them and drive them on, (with big whips)!
Definately some fanatical eviscerator weilding priests and stuff, but I'm really not to sure on the colours. I don't want to go too sterotypically chaos, but I like the idea of red and brass on the elites.
Thanks for the advice so far.

Well, going with this information I would probably go something red and gold/brass. When you see that kind of scheme it screams chaotic in my view. It probably wouldnt be that hard to get an effective red either...
Oh, that just gave me an idea. Red fatigues, dark grey/black flak armour? Then maybe you could flip the scheme for the milita?

I think I might give the militia grey fatigues so they look less ornate, but give the squad leaders, officers red detailing so they stand out from their men.
Thanks for the tips, off to assemble a prototype.

OK, prototype assembled, and I quite like the look. When I get my hands on some of the forge world autoguns etc I think I can get quite a nice mix going.

Can't wait to see them, why don't you make a squad or two of cultists to a particular God, just an idea...

Black under coat, then a layer of mechrite red, then a final coat of 2:1 shining gold and mechrite red. Don't ask me how to do non metallic metal, I haven't the faintest of a clue.

Right. Shopping was done yesterday. Prime the clippers, ready the glue and load the paint pots.
You might even get some pics up soon!
I am keeping a holy text near by to ward of the touch of Chaos, so don't worry about me!

Does purging with plasma work?

I believe so, seeing as the plasma is super heated gas...

How about painting them up to look like Blood Pact from the Gaunt's Ghosts novels? That would look totally awesome, IMO.

But don't the blood pact slash their own hands up with knives? No wonder they always lose..

ah, The Shostak Heresy... As an alternative for painting brass, the way I do it is: 1) paint the brass area with Scorched Brown 2) paint over this (leaving any tiny holes Scorched Brown) with a 2:1 mix of Scorched Brown:Shining Gold 3) final layer of 1:1 mix of Scorched Brown:Shining Gold Depending how gold/tarnished you want it to look, 4) highlight the edges with Shining Gold 5) add a couple of "chips" (or very worn) patches with Mithril Silver (VERY sparing with this last step.

But don't the blood pact slash their own hands up with knives? No wonder they always lose.. Upon being initiated into the cult, they supposedly cut the palms of their hands on the sharpened edges of Archon Urlock Gaur's power armor to symbolize the pact. As far as future mutilation may go, it's not mentioned, but hey, they're Chaos loonies, so anything goes!
