In the past I have had some trouble with the GW decals. They go on fine, but within a very short time start chipping off. Anyone else had that problem? If so, has anyone found a way to keep it from happening?

I have had the same issue. My fix: get the wife to paint on the numbers.

Gloss cote your models first, apply decals, then use dullcote/matte.
The white glue is a good suggestion, just make sure you dilute it first and put it on thin or it could really get botched.

There is some stuff I used to have, I forget what it was called but essentially it was a spray-on coating for decals. It affixed the decals on permanantly and also made the clear backing on them invisible, it was really useful on model planes and stuff with a lot of decals. It did react with unpainted plastic though, and made the canopy on my plane opaque so if you find this stuff cover all unpainted clear plastic bits with tape, or put them on after.

If you WANT a chipped look, gently drybrush some of the armor color over the decal. Gives it a good, worn look.
Might also help to keep it from chipping ::shrug:: I've never used decals. Too much trouble for so little reward. Except tanks.

well if you like using the decals, i would suggest using a watered down elmers glue coat.
to take away the shine of the dried glue, spray the model with a little matte varnish
is that how you spell matte? haha anyway, thats what i would do

I actually make really small cuts around the edges of the decal, so that it conforms to the surface better, and i've found that since there is less of the decal is upraised, not as much can get underneath and start chipping it off.

Ive never had to use decals except on tanks so would know what to do but it makes sense to put a glue gloss coat over the decal.
