Greetings all, it seems that I have been bitten by the bug bug. Being new to Tyranids, I have a general idea for what I want to do for an army, however I do not know how viable it would be and I would like some assistance if possible. Pretty much what I want to do is have a primarily flying assault army and have whatever cannot fly be dropped by myocetic spores if I can swing it. Sky slasher swarms with venom sacs are very appealing to me with this possible list. Now the biggest problem that I can forsee is being able to deal with tanks. Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.
On another note, the idea of the Tyrannofex seems really cool, however the cost to field it seems like a rather heavy points sink for what it does. Thoughts on this?

Flying Circus lists can work. Sky-Slashers, however, are not usually a part of successful Lists in this area. You're looking at two Flyrants*, two Gargoyle Broods, and some Shrikes for a successful Flying Circus, probably backed up by some Gaunts, a Troops Tärvigon or two, and some Hive Guard to hold Objectives and pop Transports. This does mean starting with at least a few Units on the Table or in regular Reserves, though.
Full drop Lists tend not to do so well, but if you add a couple Broods of Outflanking Stealers, they can be alright. Decent Units for a Mycetic Spore drop are mostly Gaunts with Devourers and Fexen with two pairs of TL Devourers and Brainleech Worms.
The SwarmLord can be nice in a list like that at larger Points Values, since his ability does stack with Hive Commander, and the Re-Roll on Outflanking for the Stealers is sweet. That's going to give you more of a multi-pronged approach than a Flying Circus, though, with a Footslogging element, a Flying Element, an Outflanking element, and possibly a Deep Striking element.
The T-Fex is great, but can be hard to use. The Acid Spray version is easiest to use well, but doesn't do much that the rest of the Nid Army can't do just fine. The Fleshborer Hive just sucks. The Rupture Cannon is the main reason you'll see people taking a T-Fex, and it can do a lot of good, but you'll generally need a pair to get much reliability out of them. This usually restricts their use to Games of 2000 Points or more.
The Rupture Cannon T-Fex also needs to be used as an all-rounder Unit to do well. If it just hangs back, plinking at Tanks, it won't give you a good return on investment. If you advance it with everything else, using it to block LoS, pop Tanks, shred Infantry**, and generally be unkillable, it'll frustrate your enemies to no end, and be a solid part of your list. Can't recommend it for a Drop List, though.
*Note that (per the FAQ) Hive Commander doesn't stack, so only one of your Flyrants should have it. One of them definitely should, though, it's crucial to get stuff in as fast as possible in a list like this.
** Always take the Cluster Spines and Dessicator Larvae. The other options there just can't match up against 99% of what you're going to have to deal with.

Looks like my initial entry into Nids will be a 500 point army... Flying hive tyrant 2x hormagaunt broods 3x Shrike
I am sure it will expand drastically from there.

A good start. Id give TTH with a bit of salt though, there are a lot of idiots in there amongst the more helpful members, one reason why I tend to spend more time on here.

I love the community here. I'm not one to badmouth, but it does seem that some of the members there are 'just members there', and leave silly.irrelevant posts rather than contributing and sharing their hobby. At least the silly people here also start threads and contribute in a constructive manners to discussions (most of the time anyway ) There are gems (like Westrider) on there too who are generally awesome, and I don't want to tar them with the same brush as those who let the site down. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnyway good luck with your flying circus based list, it's not something I've tried, although I can tell you it looks damn scary from across the other side of the table

I've faced a flying swarm with my guard, a little different as it was led by the parasite, which once it got into combat did a lot of damage, especially with it pooping rippers.
