you could do what i do every squad has a different colored trim which makes each squad stand out in the transport case and the board itself

you could do what i do every squad has a different colored trim which makes each squad stand out in the transport case and the board itself I did this with my dark angels and it works really well - you don't really need to identify the different squads with space marines since you typically don't have 50 of them base to base to base pretty much but with guard you do. I was happy with the results of doing a different color for each squad's base, though I recommend not doing this until you've playtested with your minis enough to "set" your squads since it makes it kinda less appealing to mix and match stuff around and try new things when you're splitting units of 10 like colored rimmed bases up and whatnot. another alternative to unit identification that I use with my cadians is putting their squad number on the top of their head, that way looking down on them, it's easy to see where each squad is. getting back to the base rim issue - I like doing a dark brown if you're using patches of static grass over a drybrushed 'dirt and rocks' layer of texture. my cadians have a 'game base' where it's green flocking with goblin green rims - the idea for this is to make the base dissapear into the flocking of the tabletop - it also works very nicely.
