I basecoat in Black myself, I was just wondering what people used. If you could give a brief explanation of why you use a color I would appreciate it very much.
I use black because it seems to make my colors darker, as well as some shadow effects.

White undercoats are only for people who are painting with bright colors, like yellows, some reds, some blues, etc.

Black all the way, since my armies are either Boltgun metal, or grey.

I basecoated my Cadian 551st infantry army with white, and as a result it's 'brighter' - they turned out fine so right on. I really like using black however - it speeds things along, cuz you can shortcut a bit where the shadows are so deep you really can't tell if a spot needs to get any paint or if black is just fine. it results in a bit darker model overall which I find is nice.

Believe it or not I base coat using pink Krylon Fusion at least for my tanks I do. If I am base coating someone elses I use Black Krylon fusion.
Krylon fusion is speically formulated to "Bond" with the plastic. So there is no need for a primer. Less coats of paint the better it is.

Black is always best for me; the shadow arguments are most convincing personaly.
It's a hell of a timesaver, you can just do undercoat, base it in say DA Green (for fatigues) leaving belts etc black. If white is used, every square millimetre will need painting to avoid an 'unfinished' look which can lead to a sort of over-complicated look. Simpler black undecoats need less time and effort, and look simpler on the field en masse, of course a great asset to an Imperial Guard player with hordes of infantry.
That said, white is the only option when painting a bright section (eg the red tank markings on my vehicles) otherwise you end up with a horrible blotchy splash of red paint on your tanks.

I did use to use Grave-yard Earth for My LOTR armies (I did this before Guy Haley, began going on about it.....). This is a great way of painting Mordor orcs quick because you only need to drybrush them with a bit of bleached bone and a thined down wash of Chaos black mixed with a little scorched brown to get them looking ready for battle.
Nowadays, I use Black spray paint, followed by a wash of watered Chaos black.
