Been working on and off on this model for a few days. And besides snapping off his Inquisitorial rosette with my pinky finger, I'm more or less happy with the results. What I could use some imput on is the power sword....I'm not very happy with the look of it right now. I want it to stick out from the ones the rest of my army has (which are more or less painted like the one he has now), but im not sure which way to go. Any suggestions? I've seen some pretty nice greenish and red ones...but I haven't been able to decide which way to go. /sorry for the photo quality, but at least it captures the look of his sword..I need a better camera.

Thats a sweet looking model, what exactly is it? The sword looks alittle worn in my opinion.

My advice for the power sword would be to paint it a metalic colour, and then highlight with a very light blue colouration (storm blue?) along the sword edges

I like working from a middle blue tone up, slowly bringing in where you highlight until finally, when your shade of blue is almost white you're actually doing the lightning arcing across the sword. here's an example (sorry for crappy pic quality and generally poor example but hey, what can ya do eh?) you have a very sweet inquisitor model there, by the way

whiteandblackIts the Forgeworld Inquisitor Lok model. Which can be found here www.forgeworld.co.uk/inqlok.htmI picked him up on ebay. TurtleboyI do like that lightening arc effect, I will have to experiment a bit with it. I guess the real problem I have with painting power weapons is that there isn't a real concrete fluff definition of what they look like....I try to get my inspiration mainly from 40k fiction to keep my armies in line with the feel of the 40k universe, but seeing as how every other 40k novel/codex describes power-swords as looking, behaving, and glowing differently - its a little tough. But the galaxy is a big place I suppose, so its not entirely crazy that theres a variety of different types of power weapons. Anyhow, I wanted this guys sword to stand out ( so he will draw more fire, of course) that lightening pattern may work, I'll post a pic in a few days after I've experimented a bit more.

tips on making lightning:
1. drink alot of coffee so your hand shakes badly
2. use a pointalism style (painting little dots) with a very fine brush to do the lightning. this'll allow you to decide the general direction of the lightning but introduce enough of an inaccuracy that it spikes and wanders randomly, often changing the direction of the lightning unexpectedly as you actually lay it down - it's one of the few occasions where I feel like I'm actually doing art with my mini painting.
