So Battlefleet Halcyon is progressing nicely but I am not happy with the gold. So, what combination of paints and washes do you use to paint gold?

well it's all about experimenting when I paint. It all depends on what kind of gold youre looking for. If you want a shiny shiny gold i'd undercoat with a bright yellow, then a layer or two of gold, should make the gold pop.
I paint what little gold i have in my army with a layer of boltgun metal for the metallic look, then I drybrush lightly a few coats until I get the consistency Im looking for. In general it turns out pretty well.
As for washes devlan mud gives everything a rustic/weathered look, havent tried it on gold, but i would imagine it would turn it almost brass or bronze like, but with enough shine to still make it look metallic and not just weathered rust.
In my opinion take some recommendations, try them out, if you dont like the results try a different method then compare the methods youve used and decide which one you like best. Ive done that numerous times when Ive hit a brick wall with my color scheme for my Krieg. The guys at any of your local stores are usually a huge asset, theyve helped me on numerous occasions when I cant quite figure something out.

Well I've been doing tin bitz, ogryn flesh and then burnished gold. Not great.

hmmm.... what shade of gold are you trying to achieve? There are a few guys at my store who are painting experts! I could give them a call and see what they say?

50/50 scorched brown and dwarf bronze, dwarf bronze, gryphonne sepia or ogryn flesh wash, dwarf bronze the mid bits and highlight shining gold. Id recommend having a fiddle though, as shinier gold can be made by adding a bit of mithril silver. Hope it works out ok!

Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll probably have a play with the colours on monday to see what I can come up with. I am thinking:
Scorched brown shining gold ogryn flesh burnished gold chainmail
This is mainly so that the only paint I have to buy is shining gold. I didn't think of the scorched brown but have heard it from a couple of people now so will give it a try. I try to avoid mixing colours except on small one off jobs, I find it hard to replicate the effect. I am trying to get a gold that is less bright so I may go sparingly on the last two colours.
In other news, my blue fleet was looking very smurfy after I had done the last ice blue drybrush. Then I attacked it with devlan mud and it looks a lot more grim and proper. Hmmm, maybe it would be better to use devlan instead of ogryn. It is the miracle paint after all.

I usually do Chaos Black, then either of the golds, followed by a chestnut ink (now Ogryn Flesh) wash, then back in with the original gold mixed with a tad bit of Skull White; or I'll do the base gold again, then hit it with a bit of Chainmail.

My recipe for gold power armour was 50/50 scorched brown, shining gold for the first layer.
Then drybrush with shining gold when the first layer is dry. Then a wash of Devlan mud.
It's quite an antique brass colour but looks better than bright shining gold,.
