Just getting a general idea of what my fellow 40k'ers use for their bases. Which do you all prefer? Or any home recipe's some of you use.
The first model's I've whipped up I've been using flock, my army is city based and the grey ashen flock I've been using just looks like grey grass and it's driving me crazy! I want a good mix that looks like broken up rockrete, pavement, and a mix of rubble in there as well.
Thank you all ahead of time!

Shameless plug: I did a couple of basing tutorials, theyre in the terrain section, one generic and one urban. Ive also started doing scrapyard bases for my orks (see 3ff3ct's orks thread). Hope this gives you some help or inspiration

For my Guard I'm using snow washed over with purple ink for xenos grass. It has some flaws and I'm hoping to either do better in time or find a replacement. I've also started using GW sand painted grey/blue and GW slate painted in blue with both washed with blue ink prior to adding the snow.
For my Bad Moon Orks I'm using a scaled back version of 3ff3ct's Ork bases from ideas I looted from his thread.
Having always been quite pitiful and lazy at basing I looked at 3ff3ct's tutorials before I started any of the above and found them to be pretty useful.

for my urban bases I use glue sand first then spread a thin layer of ready mixed polyfilla over the top, carve in some slab detail then add rubble later... Quiet time consuming but it gives a nice concrete texture thats neither too smooth or too rough. I found a good simple concrete colour can be done by painting it flat Codex Grey, then drybrush with Dheneb Stone followed by Astronomican Grey, then stick some devlan mud in the recesses. once its painted I stick little clumps of GW 'dead grass' static flock inbetween the slabs. I have a few threads scattered through here somewhere if you wanna check them out, hope that helps

Make sure its the ready mixed stuff as its a sod to get the consistency right! I use quick drying stuff in a tube and squeeze it onto a pallatte. its a little messy, but once you get the hang of it its all good for miniatures bases i use a plastic spatula to smack it on and smooth it out, and for buildings I use and old credit card! works a treat! Any left over dries and can be broken up for rubble

My basing is not the best, but I used little sandy rock stuff from a beach in Ireland where I lived for a few months and started my army. I brought a bag of the stuff back to the states to finish the army. Again, doesn't look awesome, but has a cool story for me.

You'll have to buy some from GW. I still laugh at the fact that they ship it to the Emerates. 'selling sand to arabs' ;D That and 'Snow to Eskimos', although I dont personally know any Inuit gamers

I believe Saudi sand can't be used in Concrete so they import it all the time.
I personally do sand because it free.
