an alternative to a chimera actually, going for a more 'real world' apc/land rover/humvee type vehicle, it was a potential commission for someone, but the problem was with scale, trying to get a vehicle large enough that it looks like it might fit a reasonable number of men in, without being too tiny or too large. The first attempt I made was similar size to a chimera, but with driver/gunner crew, they looked tiny. In the end I threw in the towel, I am no good at scratch building stuff, I can't cut plasticard in straight lines, as I mentioned elsewhere. I still have various ideas for this project knocking about, but it needs financing, and I have too many other projects on the go.

Well my initial idea was to take a taurus venator and slightly elongate the back, leave off the large lascannon turret for a heavy bolter mount, but it is an expensive kit to buy one purely to try a conversion idea, so I had to try and make something similar myself. I also have ideas for using an ork trukk, de-orkifying it (technical term) and making it lower to the ground and enclosed.

well it was for someone else that I haven't spoken to for over a year, so it probably wont be revisited now. I took on one commission for a ravenwing army, after a guy bought mine from me, he wanted me to convert and paint the ravenwing he already had to match it, I bought a load of components and made a start, but he never paid me for bits so they are still around waiting, after two years. The other was for some renegade vehicles and infantry, but I couldn't get the apc to work, and he never decided what he wanted doing on the other stuff, so that never happened either

Finish it and get it on ebay, at least that way you'll get some revenue back (and free up some space!). And we can see fun pictures

The mostly finished Salamander. There are a few more details to add, unit markings and a few touch ups, but mainly done, opinions please. Captain Robinson leads the armoured company from her Vanquisher Steel Vengeance with overall commander. On the battlefield Lieutenant Grimmald has direct control of all support elements, artillery, infantry, and air support. Whilst Captain Robinson leads the battle tanks, Lieutenant Grimmald issues orders to everything else from his personal command vehicle. The Salamander is equipped with an array of comm and sensor systems and continuously gathers and collates realtime battlefield data. Comms Officer Nant monitors the vox traffic, as well as issuing Grimmald's orders. His console stores all vox logs to be saved to the onboard cogitators, whilst Nant updates the system with other details. This information can then be viewed by Grimmald's Strategic Advisor Hanson, who can bring up area maps or unit details upon his fold down holo-display. Here you can see Grimmald and Hanson mid operation as they view the tactical display. A squadron of leman russes (blue dots) advances upon the enemy line (represented by red blips). The companies attached Manticore, Emperor's Fury, can be seen behind the battle tanks, softening rebel lines. Upon the hill (whose green contour lines can be seen) to the rear left of the formation, Captain Robinson uses the elevated position and superior line of sight to target enemy supporting armour, ruthlessly eliminating threats to the advancing russ squadron. Beyond the range of that particular map view, the armoured fist squads with air support sweep the enemy flank, driving the rebel infantry platoons back into the centre, onto the tanks. Grimmald holds his orders in one hand as he indicates an enemy position, reeling off instructions to Nant, who passes them on in turn to units in the field. Strategic Advisor Hanson controls the tactical display by the joystick and buttons mounted upon in, panning and zooming the display as required. On the right hand side of the command compartment can be seen crates containing various supplies, as well as additional weapons and fuel. On the wall behind the crew are emergency gas masks and other gear. On extended operations the salamander will often carry multiple crates stacked against the right hand wall, typically containing extra ammo and provisions for the men.

Very nice use of the Hellhound kit! The interior details, especially the display for the auspex, are most excellent...

excellent, just need to paint 46 of them now...
In the next few days I shall be making a bodyguard and an officer of the fleet for my command squad using spare parts, a toilet roll, half an egg box, and some sticky back plastic.

The only thing I'd suggest with the Elysians would be to perhaps give them a light wash with Badab black over the grey areas to make the details pop a bit. They're looking really nice, though! Waiting with interest to see how your body guard and master of the fleet turn out!

I am undecided right now whether the fleet officer should be dress uniform like the GW model, or a more practical battlefield look, given that an elysian command squad is not the type to sit back and observe, at the very least valkyrie deployment makes the dress uniform seem somewhat silly, but it would be an easier model to make...

Ah, I ran into the same thing. I painted up the Palpatine look-alike fleet officer, and though it's a nice mini, he didn't really fit in with my jungle thugs. A staff member at my local GW suggested throwing one together from Valkyrie door gunner and Baneblade commander parts to fit in with a carapace armored CCS. Here's what I came up with: Feel free to nick the idea if you want!

It's the door gunner body, with arms, shoulder pads, and the head from a baneblade commander, and some spare frag grenades. astonishingly simple to make, and he looks the part.
