I painted my CCS officer’s power sword with a lightning effect and afterwards I was taken with the idea of maybe having a theme of various skies for the different power swords in my army: A sword of sunrise, a sword of the moon, one of clouds, one of rain, etc.
But I can see that there could be a couple of problems. They might not work out that well visually and they might not work too well with the fluff.
As far as fluff goes I think a power sword is a force field weapon so I can kinda imagine that having visual effects play over the surface would be a feature of the classier weapons and I’m also under the impression that the older and more valuable swords were made more as works of art, sometimes using techniques and skills that have been lost to the modern period.
At any rate what do you guys think? I could really use some feedback as I want to get the other two power swords in my force painted before Friday.
Thanks in advance, empty.

These days power swords are generally just the blades with the power fields, but, alternate schemes do work. In fact, I've used a "sunrise" color scheme on multiple swords in my armies, and they come out rather nicely.
It really is up to you though, and in fact, you could experiment with washes to give the blades more of a shine to make the details stand out more.

Do what you want with it. The Fluff can always be justified. I wouldn't go to overboard, but including a couple of different, 'master crafted' power swords would be pretty cool.
