If I wanted to play some casual Necromunda in the future what would I need? I'd probably want to have enough for two sides.

Don't need much, try here for the rules, and one of the £20 sets is enough to start, but you need to expand your collection as your gang grows in power.

You will also need a decent amount of scenery. Necromunda uses far more than other games.

Yeah, I started reading through the PDF last night but given that metal model supplies might disappear sooner or later without replacements I was hoping for some people with experience to give me an estimate. The £20 set being enough to start is a good tip but how much do gangs tend to expand?

I can't see a gang going higher than 20 models, probably.
Don't forget casualties. Your gang has to very lucky to always win and get the extra recruits, and at the same tiime not lose any members. Plus if you get too big the Arbites can always smash you down to size, just to give the other gangs a fair chance.
If you're inventive you could make plastic gangs, anyway. It's a lot of effort to keep them looking authentic, but I still have fond memories of my 'Confrontation' gang made out of old IA plastic guard and cocktail sticks for shotguns, when I was a little nipper at school...

Might be a good second use for those chem-rat-dogs I'm making up in your style.
Right now though I'm probably only going to get one regular opponent and since Necromunda seems to be better with a group I'm going to slide it down my priority list and mess around with Dreadfleet instead.
I might still pick up some models though.

The Necromunda minis are some of the best that GW has ever designed, and you should get your hands on some while they're still available, "just because." However, the Orlocks and Goliaths were re-sculpted, and the new minis for them are crap. The Eschers, Van Saar, Cawdor, and Delaque minis are still awesome, though, especially the Eschers.

Heresy! An Ecclesiarchy representative will be along momentarily to fit you to a Penitent Engine...
