Hey all, so it goes that a coworker and a couple of friends are doing heresy era Marine armies based on the Horus Heresy books and background materials. Everything that keep seeing is nothing but space marines, even though the Imperial Army provided a lot of support throughout the Crusades and heresy as well. I know that BOLS put out a 30k supplement as well, though it too only covers the Astartes legions. So what I want to start here is twofold. One, I would like to establish a similar supplement that would cover the arms and equipment of the Imperial Army. Two, I would like to convert an army based on the fluff from the books.
As far as equipment goes, some restrictions would be to remove a bunch of the newer Leman Russ variants if not the Leman Russ entirely as it was re-discovered later by Leman Russ of the Space Wolves. Possibly the Valkyrie / Vandetta and the Chimera as well. Other restrictions may apply.
Additional equipment that may apply would be the Landraider (though rare) as it was sometimes supplied to the Imperial Army formations, the Rhino in place of the Chimera, and the Malcador heavy tank as the standard tank of the army. Jetbikes and speeders may be applicable as well since the old Rogue Trader era miniatures had them.
One of the single most common descriptions that I have seen for Imperial Army troopers is with longcoats and shakos. The closest minis would be the Vostroyan models, though the range is fairly limited.
Any thoughts ideas or suggestions? I think it would be neat to develop this.

Do it!
They had shoulder mounted heavy weapons, although you could still classify them as 'teams' if you want.
Jump-pack assault guardsmen had twin laspistols, but maybe you could slap in the options of either lasgun or laspistol and cc instead, to keep pistol costs down.. Bikes have been given new experimental rules in the relevant board.
Land speeders and single-seater jetbikes would be great.
What models are you planning on making, being that you only have 3 FA slots and so many options.

Yup, I did like the old heavy weapons. One of the old RTT era goodies was a suicide bomber demolition charge... I am going to do some more digging through the old stuff and see what if I can come up with a difinitive list.

These were the original infantry models... www.fortunecity.com/underworld/myst/171/imparmy.jpgI believe anyway. You could pssobly use a mixture of SM Scout parts, current IG and some other bits. EDIT I just noticed the price in the top right corner.....£2.50 for 5?!? I want a time machine!!

Yup, I am pretty familiar with the old RTT miniatures... The Sentinel looked so very different then! What I am thinking for bits for a conversion would be to use the armored torsos from the Empire Longswords box, the robed legs from the High Elves Archers box, Cadian arms with modified lasguns to look more like the old version, and Space Wolves bare heads with shakos sculpted on as I want the very beardy look to them.

The Imperial army apparently had Landraiders, Landspeeders, jetbikes, Predators and Rhinos for the bulk of the crusade it was around the heresy the basilisk STC was discovered and later developed into the Chimera, however during the seige of Terra at some point the Emperor decreed all the Landraiders and such would be given over to the defending Astartes forces to replace losses and since his little showdown with Horus crippled him, he never got round to recinding the order... Also there is mention of whole tank brigades of superheavies such as the BaneBlade, so that gives an idea of just how huge the army forces would have been, also Army and Navy used to be intergrated as a single unit, as far as Valkyrie's are concerned not sure when they came into production, but if they are crusade era they would probably still have been an eilte strike craft due to the small transport capacity, Stormbirds would probably been used by the army as well as the astartes
