OK firstly no I'm not ditching the guard for smurfs!
Just let's face it the space marines are the figure heads for 40k, just look at the pc games and the number of different chapters of them compared to the number of kits of the other races/factions.
But ok want to get an idea of a good colour scheme for my marines, I'm thinking calling them the Penance Legion. Basically they formed after the heresy to atone for the betray of their brothers to the imperium. So was thinking black and white for the basics. Sort of like the crusaders from history, many of the men went to atone for their sins... Also can see some of the fluff coming through already.
Oh and a little more fluff/ideas: the scouts will be green armour and bleached bone clothing. I know might be out of touch but to me they are scouts so should have some camo but also as they are new marines they haven't earned the right to wear the colours. Also my marines recruit from worlds they save/saved and if a marine chapter is lost members may join. Last one is very important to the general idea, they failed the emperor and their chapter thus they join the crusade to eradicate the traitors!

i recon a kinda black/white quaters pattern would look awsome though if you did a white cross on the loin cloth and a red cross as the chapter symbol (or use the black templars logo but in red) that would work well i think

Thinking now, as there's a lot of black space marines like legion of the damned and black templars that I'll go the other way, main plates white with black edging, may also wash them with black.

may also wash them with black. I think that'd just make them look dirty. I like the quarters idea, not something you see much of nowadays. What about trying a marbling technique, theres a hell of a lot of space on marine models and it'd look great if you pulled it off

Don't think I've got the skill for the marbling, might do some of it on my special models and that tho a good idea.
And I know it does, would be a very light wash just to make it look less like a new car and more like a battled soldier, might use sephia insted. or i could buy the Devlan Mud. Just don't want the white to look full and not good at doing battle damage so would have them looking a bit weathered insted. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

not good at doing battle damage Rubbish! Even I can do it! Add some grey scratches, paint the inside of the grey (leaving a bit showing) with chainmail and bobs your uncle! £130 is quite a lot for something that was £200 before it was half built and painted

I think the green axe idea is cool!
if you want to see how not to do white, have a look at my attempt in the painting guides section, I started with a dark grey and worked up, but they have ended up looking bright grey rather than white (I was going for white templars).. Reckon you're better off starting with a white base colour, then do a very thin black wash and then dry brush with a few coats of watered down white colour.
I look up to people who can do white well!

Yeah guessing I'll need a couple of new paints and a new brush to try it.

I like the fluff concept of the "penance legion". One possible way to expand upon it could be that it isn't a dedicated chapter of it's own, but it is where marines of other legions go to atone for their sins. I can see it either with lots of different armour patterns, or a uniform scheme with chapter specific shoulder pads (like death watch). Just a thought anyway.

Yeah ;D Ambitious painting is great, push those boundaries dude! Good luck too, and great on you for trying something different! I imagine that there will be a 'how to' when the 'crons come out, if not just swap the coulours in the blood angel/space hulk painting guides for greens

If you want a quick easy marbling technique, here's how I do my bloodletter swords, primer, base colour, light wash all over, once dry overload your brush with wash an drop it on, draging it in a few places, and bobs your uncle, done.

see one that seems a good idea, just water some colours down so they arent as watery as washes but are less then the other.
