Hey Phillips,
When building Forge World models there are a few steps you need to take to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Step 1: Check every model for defectsForge World has amazing customer service and if you find an issue, they will (usually) fix it. I have had a few replacements sent for miscasts and broken parts.
Step 2: Wash, wash, wash! These models usually come caked with a release agent. You will need to make sure you wash them really good before you glue them together. I usually soak them in warm water and dish soap (washing up liquid) for a few hours. Then, I will gently scrub them with a very soft, old toothbrush.
Then, after they have been built, I usually give them another quick wash.
Step 3: Remove from sprue n' glue.Careful with sprue removal as you can accidentally snap off feet if you're not gentle enough. Once you have all the pieces off and cleaned up it's time to glue.
You can't use plastic glue at all, it won't work no matter what. If your glue isn't sticking, it is either because you didn't wash the models good enough and the release agent is preventing the binding, or you are using the wrong glue.
You need to use super glue. There are a few brands on the market and if you need help, tell us where you live and I'm sure someone can recommend some.
Step 4: Straighten Bent partsForge World is notorious for bent parts, and sometimes you need to actually bend parts to get them to fit. If you need to straighten a part (sword, gun, etc.), or if you're trying to get a different pose (gun position, bent leg, etc.) do one of the following techniques.
A. Run the tap at super hot, hold the part under the water for a few moments and then bend into place.
B. Boil water, hold part in water for a few seconds and bend to desired position.
Step 5: PrimerPaint won't stick to resin unless it is first sprayed with a primer. Forge World suggests a strong automotive primer, but I use Krylon Grey Primer. There are a lot of different primers out there so it's hard to recommend just one.
Step 6: PaintFrom here, you can paint as normal. If your primer is done correctly, you should have no problems.
Optional Steps: Do these if you're super awesome! With my army I took a few extra steps that you may want to consider as well.
- Putty Filler:With many of the FW models, they don't really fit all that well, and many times you'll have gaps where things join.
To solve this use model putty (Tamyia, Green Stuff) and fill the gaps. There are lots of posts dealing with how to do this.
- Airbubbles:As with the gaps, many FW models come with little air bubbles. You can fill these with putty as well (or superglue in a pinch).
Not to sound insulting, but these steps need to be done before primer is put on, or it will look like a giant painting of goat balls hung in the hallway of a run down diner on route 25, while a homeless man licks them with a grin, while whistling the theme song to My Little Pony. And finally, check this out
