So I wanted to try out something new with my batreps as they tend to end up getting too indepth on what each unit is doing at any given point.............. I had a particularly lucky Commissar in this game, who I figured deserved a name now (you'll see why I hope) and as only 1 other person from his PCS survived the battle (I hope I've not given too much away;)), I thought that he would make a good narrator. So first attempt at any sort of story based batrep. I hope you like it. I'll apologise for the cheesey one liners in advance, but I figured every war story needs a bit of cheese.........
The column had been advancing slowly thru the ruined town all morning when the idle vox chatter was cut short by enemy sightings from the air recon section, a large humanoid creature waiting in ambush 2 blocks away. The lieutenant looked nervous, activating and deactivating his power fist, turning the internal walls of the Chimera APC from red to blue, back to red again.
A booming noise of turbines could be heard as a Valkarie rushed past over head on its way to intercept.
‘Target acquired’ Captain Ashworth’s voice chattered thru the vox network, ‘and boy is this a big mother, engaging’.
I rechecked the ammo of my grenade launcher, stood up and opened the top hatch of our transport for a better look around. The hellhound acting as our forward scout was visible a block away, Major Vander’s APC covered our left flank, the lumbering behemoth of a leman Russ battle tank supporting our right, the men of our platoon a tide of green fatigues spread out using the armour as cover. Far to my left I could see the strand of trees covering our reserves, behind, our supporting auto cannons were getting in to an elevated position in a crumbling tower.
‘So how’s the view up there?’ Asked Commissar Romanski.
‘Air support just dropped behind those ruins up ahead sir, I can’t see any..’
My answer was cut off by Captain Ashworth’s voice pumped through the command chimera’s comms, disjointed and interrupted by static.
‘That just made it angry, fall back! Major, mission failed, we wounded the big bastard....... but it’s not enough, it’s coming straight for us, back to the bird!!’ The vox erupted in chaos.
Up ahead I saw the valk start to lift off, my view mostly obscured by the terrain, it seemed to be listing in the air, as if unable to lift off properly when a huge sword twice the height of a man sheared a wing clean off and it crashed to the ground with a crump of folding metal and orange fire ball, followed closed by a plume of smoke.
‘Ashworth! Report!’ Romanski barked, ‘What is your situation?’
‘We’re falling back but its got Jansen Ashworth’s voice was cut off as the vox net was filled with screams of the dying.
We advanced with a new sense of urgency, an Exterminator taking up position in the centre of a cross roads to our left, perfect lines of sight in all directions. I lost track of the hellhound as it cornered the ruins on my right. ‘I see him’ I yelled, as the Captain and 1 other survivor from his unit burst in to view in the ruined building directly in front of us, the monstrous creation 3 times the height of a man spotted the advancing APCs, and turned its attention our way, as Ashworth fled back towards our lines.
‘Get that tin can out of our way!’ the Major’s voice boomed across the comms, but in the narrow confines of the streets, there was no room to manoeuvre, and the beast was advancing straight towards us.
The air was cut with a high pitch whine as half a dozen jet bikes, swooped around the creature baring down on us, the buildings in front exploded with enemy troops that fell on Ashworth’s mauled squad with chain swords and pistols, slaying all in their path. I felt heat on my face and nearly dropped my weapon as a giant man shaped apparition appeared from a building directly to our left, it’s body super heated and shimming, a giant spear in 1 hand, blood constantly dripping from the other. With a roar it threw its spear directly at the Majors APC, the armoured plates buckled, and the Major barely managed to escape the wreckage with his attending staff. That was when our own transport was targeted. I heard the ricochets first, as munitions bounced harmless of our hull, when a flash of light blinded me and heat burned my face, unable to breath I tried to duck down into the safety of our transport. ‘Don’t be an idiot, only death remains in here!’ I hear Romanski shout as he pushed me over the edge of the top hatch and behind the safety of the wreckage, the Lieutenant and the rest of the squad piling out the back. I landed in a heap on top of an infantry man, his eyes wide and staring. ’They’re just too fast’ he screamed ‘where did they go’ I turned as Romanski dragged me back to me feet, the bikes were gone, only the giant mechanical construct remained where they had been, I ducked as it’s huge lance emitted a pulse of burning light directly in to the Exterminator in the cross roads, scorching a perfect circle in the front armour plating. The crew panicked, throwing the tank in to reverse, leaving us to our fate.
Tank threads creaked and rattled as the hellhound swung back around the building, targeting its multi melta on the wraith lord but missing wildly, the leman Russ tried to manoeuvre for a target in the confined area created by the wreckage, and platoon surging forwards towards the ruins to engage the nimble foes sheltered within, opening up with lasguns. The Major moved his squad around the wrecked APC to target the avatar, as the lieutenant lead us back thru the rear hatch of our smouldering chimera. ‘Onwards’ he screamed, climbing out the top of the hull activating his power fist as we followed, the hair on my arms singeing in the heat of the popping electrics. A metal strut holding his weight snapped, and he fell back in to the cabin, speared thru the thigh on a sharp barb of the ruined seating, a dark pool of blood forming as his artery began pumping his life blood on to the charred floor.
‘Keep moving’ ordered Romanski, pushing us onwards over the wreck ‘and kill that thing!’. We blindly fired our grenade launchers as we cleared the wreck, and the promethium tank for the heavy flamer ignited. The lieutenant screamed once as the air emptied from his lungs in the heat, the remains of our squad face to face with the towering wraith lord, its carapace melted in places by close range melta fire.
I could hear the majors orders as he called his squad to target the avatar, and it scream with rage and pain as super heated plasma ripped in to its body. The rough chatter of auto cannon fire lit up the beast with tight co-ordinated fire directed by the major, and the creature toppled to the ground lifeless.
A huge explosion rocked the ruins containing the enemy troops as the Leman Russ opened fire, and the alien warriors fell back from the ruins. ‘Keep moving’ ordered Romanski, activating his power fist and charging straight towards the hulking beast. Parker was cut in half by the huge sword and Anders was lifted from the ground head first by a huge fist. He screamed as his skull fractured, and his lifeless body hit me hard on the shoulder, knocking me to ground his face a bloody mess.
I looked on desperately as Carter just avoided the sword swung at his head, Romanski standing defiantly, back lit by the fire and smoke of the wreckage plunged his fist into a weakened section of armour in the WLs belly and ripped out a huge chunk of internal workings, crushing them with his power fist. The creature spasmed, its left arm jerking erratically, as it fell to the floor dead. Romanski led us on, pushing the eldar warriors back as they retreated faster than we could follow.
Our victory was short lived, as the jet bikes opened fire on us from the safety of the ruins, we hit the deck, as I desperately tried to dig a hole in the wreckage left by the valkarie, but amazingly, none of the deadly projectiles found their mark. We were unprepared when 6 bikes swooped in low over our position, 2 snagged on parts of the aerofoils and tumbled to the ground like ragdolls. A bare headed alien, power sword humming charged straight thru us, cutting Carter’s throat wide open while I ducked to avoid a similar fate. Only Romanski appeared un-phased, his power fist still emitting a deathly blue halo in the smoke, as the Autarch spun round for another pass he was hit full in the chest, as Romanski ripped him from his mount and dashed his skull to the ground. The remaining jet bikes, shocked at the loss of their leader, turned to flee, but were cut down as they tried to escape. Romanski turned his cold eyes to me and pointed his bolt pistol at my head.
‘Get up.’ Was all he said.
Giddy I struggled to me feet and surveyed the battle field. To our right, our platoon was swarming over the ruins, the hellhound, appearing in front of us, as it swung around the building, defending our flank should the alien warriors return. Far to my left, alien tanks and more bikes were firing on our reserves in the woods. I couldn’t see who survived, but sporadic missiles erupted from the woods, immobilising a small, fast moving speeder that had outflanked them.
The Major had moved to some ruins on the outskirts of town and was directing fire from the AC support in to a gun ship bristling with weapons, knocking it from the sky, the exterminator, finally targeting the contents, shredding 3 of the alien warriors, the remains fell back. ‘Take them down’ ordered Romanski, I flipped to frag, and chambered a shell. My joints electric with adrenaline, causing my aim to waver terribly, I cast a glance at the Commissar, terrified he would see my fear, but could not bring any shots to bear on the target.
The return fire from the woods ceased, our reserves wiped out, shredded by deadly alien munitions, the agile jet bikes, dodging battle cannon rounds and auto cannon fire as they swept in to our camp. I saw the major’s squad cut down around him, swept away by scatter lazer and shuriken fire, as fire dragons emerged from their transport and slagged the exterminator targeting the speeding jet bikes. The exploding tank caught the Major’s squad as well as the aliens, bodies turned to a fine red mist, as shrapnel ripped thru both friend and foe.
I swear I heard the dull hum of the Major’s power sword all the way across the battlefield as he charged in to the orange armoured foe, outnumbered 5-1, I lost sight of him as the smoke from the wrecked exterminator obscured my vision.
I jumped at Romanski gripped my shoulder.
‘You did well today, don’t worry about the Major, he’s a tough man and besides....... we have more than enough officers in this regiment as it is.’
