Hello all. I currently have a small DKoK engineer force winging its way towards me in the mail. The three engineer squads are to be used as veterans, and will be fighting out of blimps/zeppelins/airships. I have mocked up a rough template of what the end result will vaguely look like in the hope that I can get some thoughts and suggestions. The blimp will be using a drink bottle as a base, and will have a wire frame with canvas over the top. In the picture below you can see a test-patch. Each end of the balloon will be tapered, with large fins on the back. The gondola is going to be made from plasticard, but I have mocked up a rough lego version for proof of concept. I’m thinking of making it a little smaller so that it is better balanced with this size balloon. I would make a bigger balloon, but I want it to remain manageable for transport and in-game practicality. If anybody says “but it is too small, your army must be midgets”, I’ll kindly point out that most 40k transport vehicles have woeful scale issues with their transport departments, before telling them to go away. Oh, and it will be COVERED in rivets, like any good Imperial Guard vehicle. I won’t be starting this project in earnest for a week or so, because I need to order some florists wire and buy more plasticard. That said I would dearly appreciate some feedback, thoughts and suggestions on the concept and what I have planned.

I actual searched for a Zeppelin model scale that would fit with the 28mm heroic (1/48-1/50) scale, but learned that the Zeppelin would be like 5 meters long. So if it should be the right scale it’s a rather large project. Wouldn’t use it for any real game purpose but I just love Zeppelins so much! Going to do it sometime in the future in a proper scale, but think I’m going to wait. Going to watch you progress. Good luck!

I approve of the use of airships. What sort of rules are you thinking of using? Maybe you could use it as a hades breaching drill. It would represent it coming down from the sky instead of up, be pretty fragile and could use bombs for weapons.

This is looking awesome; I look forward to seeing it when the project proper begins.

If you have a gaming room with a permanent table set up in it then you could hang a Zeppelin model from the ceiling on a winch and lower it as turns pass

If you have a gaming room with a permanent table set up in it then you could hang a Zeppelin model from the ceiling on a winch and lower it as turns pass I would love that, but I only live a one room flat with my dog, girlfriend and two guinea pigs. Not enough room for a five meter long zeppelin.

Back on topic, is there any more action at the airbase (IE MajorSpeirs' gaff)?

@ Brigadier General Foster, I was planning on using a 600/750ml drink bottle, but I quickly abandoned that, and I have a stack of clean and dry 1.25L softdrink bottles on my shelf.
@ treadiculous, thanks for those links, I hadn't found those yet.
@ Gerner, you are right, the real world scale comparison is attrocious. As a result I'm simply ignoring it, and am trying to make something that looks proportionally good, whilst still being practical (transportable and not too top-heavy).
@ Trickstick, I am going to be using the three blimps as two vendettas and a valk. The hades breaching drill would probably be more appropriate, and the concept of dropping bombs and stuff would be great, however I'm looking to make it a little more "everyday", or mainstream usable.
@ 3ff3ct, there has been no photographable progress at the airbase as of yet, however I am getting ready for a burst of activity. I have my bottles, wire, fabric and glue, but I am waiting on a bundle of plasticard to arrive in the mail. Once that gets here (Monday/Tuesday?) it will be all systems go. In the mean time I have been doing some painting (see "Osarian 10th" thread).

^ You joke, however today I showed the missus the Warlord Titan in the other 'epic IG backgrounds' thread, and asked if I could make one. She said no, although she did waver a bit when I mentioned I could make a super LED cockpit and use it as a table lamp
