Hiya Gents,
I've been out of the hobby for a while but I'm getting back into the swing of things, so I thought I'd pop on and say hi.
Quick question, is it ok to break models to make models?
I have a painted up Damocles command tank that goes with my space marine army but I really want the radar dish for an IG project.
I'm really in two minds about it, so what are your thoughts?

always your call if you own it. I'd weigh both up, does the first model look better with it? does it have a use for the model? can I find a replacement to use insted?

do it... if its making something better then that justifies removing it off the old thing... or maybe theres some way to replicate the item? or buy a new one (i know how unlikly that is... you would have to buy the whole kit again)

I've bought quite a few useful items off ebay for that type of thing. Not sure what item it is tho so cant try and hep much.

It really depends on how much you want to go through with the project, and how often you're going to use the new thing vs how often you're going to use the Damocles. I'd also say it's a question of how good it will look too, but since it's you modeling it, I don't think that'll be an issue...
Welcome back, by the way.

vegna - It's really difficult, if I use it, I'll effectively be destroying the first model and there isn't really a replacement part beyond buying it from FW again. AshotNINJA - the new model will look better but it's going to be a narrative piece so it's not going to see any action, if it was for the tabletop, then I think the decision would be a lot easier. RedsandRoyals - Thanks for the welcome back and the compliment mate. I do use the damocles at all, my marine army hasn't come out of the cabinet in years but then I'm not really going to be using the new model either. I'm really not sure about this, I mean, I could end up breaking the piece when removing it from the damocles, also, there's the issue of removing paint/superglue from it. Think I'm leaning towards buying the piece again from FW gents

If you have the cash to spare, then I agree, it's probably best to pick up the piece again, rather than risk ruining it and not having the Damocles or the bitz you need for this project.
And hey, if you're not using your SM, I'll gladly take them...

I think I'm going to hold off mate, the part isn't too expensive and I just can't break a completed model.
Soz, they're staying in the cabinet mate, I can't get rid of armies for some reason. It just doesn't seem right considering how much time I invest in them.

I do not blame you. The only time I break apart a model is if the donor model is easily replaceable or if it was poorly done in the first place.

I've definitely decided not to break up the Damocles, just can't do it.
I does mean that I've got to buy the piece from FW but the conversion has now morphed into a whole modelling project, so it's worth it.

remember, you can always try sculpting it. Green stuff is a whole heck of a lot cheaper than a new model(depending on how much you buy...)
