warm colours...red, orange and yellow highlight like the oldschool cadian models in the old codex... i always imagined plasma to be hot... therefore hot colours Actually, I'm fairly certain that those colours are the colours of the coolest hot-things, if that makes sense. For example, red stars are cooler than blue stars.

In gaunt's ghost's Harker's plasma pistol is red.
I actually do a mix of colors. I figure that in the fluff at least, plasma weapons are extremely rare and ancient technology that is all but lost. I figure that the chances of and two squads having plasma weapons that came from the same forge using the same materials from the same era is nearly impossible. I figure that it stands to reason they could be several different colors. The final effect is actually pretty cool having a bunch of different ones.

I use contrast. If the gun/model is dark then I use a really bright light blue, if the gun/model is khaki then I make the plasma cell blood red. That's the reason I used purple for my plasma.... I liked the contrast to my army's colors.

Also why I used green. Not only because it looked cool, but also because it contrasted my blue themed army.

I always felt it'd look cool going from red to orange to yellow and finally white or similar to show how much power is left. Light blue however is pretty good.

i've used red, blue, copper, and yellow on my guys so far just to mix everything up, but im a big fan of the red ones especially when i shade the back side to dark red as though it's being discharged.
i agree fully with ashotninja on the hot colors.
