Played a match recently with my friends in a 2v2. I was playing guard with my ally as necrons. They were space wolves and tyranids and we rolled them really badly... to the point of the space wolves guy pretty much walked out.
We don't make competitive lists, we all mainly just use what we like.
So what are some core strategies as 'nids? What are units that a decent list can't do without? I'm just trying to help him and the space wolves guy out because we like good games.

Flying circus lists, only gimmick is how to build 4+ saves.. Max hive guard ofc to do anti mech..
Tervi spam, with max outflank stealers..
Zoanthropes in Spores, are okay.. Not really super duper, but still quite okay..

yeah, he usually uses Zoenthropes, but never uses 'stealers. Max hive guard eh? He's never even used one of those before. I'll talk to him about it and help him build up a list.

Hive Guard are pretty important for range anti tank unfortunatly...I finally went out and got me some when they became finecast, they're the only finecast models I have.
I love me some genestealers. Love em, I like Ymgarls too, they can appear from cover and assault on the turn they pop up, use the toughness boost to help them get through that first turn at initiative 1 and keep an enemy unit locked down until the rest of the stealers arrive.
Other than that, I like flying tyrants hiding behind gargoyles...
I've never felt the need to take a tervigon, but according 99% of the internet they are another requirement.

Okay, so if using 'stealers is it best to outflank or to infiltrate? He's only used em' a few times, but they got slaughtered so he thinks it's a crap unit now. I'll try and talk him around to using them a bit more.

Outflank with most of them and hope the threat of the ymgarls keep the enemy from bunching up in the center. Consider infiltrating a squad into some cover, plan on them drawing fire away from other things on the table while you wait for the reserves to arrive.
Bringing stealers out of trygon tunnels is super awesome...but you can't plan a strategy around it.

Hive Guard and Stealers are probably the two main core Nid Units, but I don't use Stealers myself, and usually manage to hold my own.
Tärvigons and Trygons are probably the only other Units that I can really recommend without knowing more about the list. Nids really have to be able to work together, and there are a lot of Units that are great in the right list, but mediocre or garbage in the wrong one.
