I remember somebody going on about 3D printers a while back, and thought this may interest those out there who want unique parts easily Discuss. ;D

'someone' ...it was me....!!!!
I'm planning on making bespoke parts for 3d printing / home casting... I'm just trying to save the money up for a decent graphics card at the moment, once I have that I'll be making all sorts of fun stuff!
When I'm ready I'll be taking requests too!
Of course I will be careful regarding GW IP...

I think it may be awhile before this is more time and $ efficient than sculpting your own parts and casting them but dang, it is cool right now.

there are videos on youtube showing industrial sized ones that are incredible quality...like this... www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0m1cVqNsRA i showed my boss today and he seemed quite interested in getting into 3d printing... says that it would look really good to create perfect quality mock ups insted of potentially wasting final products... so the future could look good for me...

@ashot: Props for getting your boss on IGMB I've sent this to a few of my engineer friends, who have positively had kittens over it. Needsless to say their CAD skills, my wild imagination and some cheap 3d printer could come up with all kinds of madness.... ;D

^ I was also wondering if 3d scanners were also affordable @ashot: That one you found is very good, a bit much to invest on a 'personal' budget though! I loved the cheapness/functionality of the one I found, and the idea of 'printing one off for your mate' really ticked some boxes! That's power in the consumers hands right there! ;D

I remember being on a tour of some technical college, and seeing a ridiculously ridiculous prototyping machine once. This thing was the size of a small room, and was fully automated after the CAD was finished. It then carved out a wax block, which could then be inspected and/or moved into a casting phase which would produce all the plastic or metal parts for the object. This thing could probably crank out all the GW and FW items you'd ever need, and with style. I actually wouldn't doubt that you could make a car with that thing...
That was the demonstration that made all 3d printers seem like weak sauce for the rest of time. I still want one, though.

Here's a cool thing... if you get AUTODESK (which is a free bit of software from the guys who make AUTOCAD) you can import Google Sketch Up files, and then save them as files suitable to be sent to a 3D printers... (and the minimum is pretty cheap).
Google Sketch Up is failry easy to use, though the AutoDesk programme has some cool tools (which are essential for making marine shoulder pads etc).
As for 3D scanners.. they aren't worth it yet, as they don't have the resolution at small scale.. you could make a large scale model and then shrink it down once the image is captured though.
I have seen some people advertising model terminators, bolt pistols etc, but none were for sale (though I bet if you PM'd them they would).

i found out the prices on the zprinter 450... £25000 for the unit and software... £600 for 8kg of the powder , £350 for a print head
so yeah... bit expensive

I have worked with 3D printed models at my job, and from my experience they still need a bit more refinement before I would be happy with them. They are made basically with stacked layers which depending on the object, it tends to leave a stepped or pixelated final model which can be a real pain to clean up. Now if the medium was the wax as noted above, that would be a breeze to clean up with minimal effort.

Just scuplt stuff with green stuff and insta-mold it while you wait for 3D printers to get better and cheaper.

I don't think they're going to get any better for that price at the moment anyway, not for a LONG time
