Well, I'm pretty sure we haven't had one of these before, so I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread showcasing everyones different basing styles. This would provide a great oppurtunity to collate a 'database' of sorts for people looking for new basing ideas.

I know 3ff3ct's into his bases and has some great examples to show, I have a couple, and I'm sure everyone else has some to share!

To keep this thread neat and tidy, I'll edit this first post with every single recipe we have, in which case it would be good if people could send me pictures of their bases, and to keep it all consistent, use a plain black background, and show the bases on their own, and then with the models attached. Also with a name for your bases, for example 'lava 1' or 'Winter wonderland' etc etc.

Basing Recipes

'Winter plains'




1) Sand
2) Kommando Khaki basecoat
3) Skull White Drybrush
4) 'Middenland Tufts' for decoration
5) Crushed Rock Salt for the snow
6) Codex Grey for the rim

'Basic Pavement'




1) Score some lines on the base using a knife, cutting a groove in a V shape
2) Basecoat Bestial Brown
3) Successive Kommando Khaki drybrushing
4) Bleached Bone Drybrush
5) Very light Skull White Drybrush
6) 'Dead Grass' flock
7) Codex Grey rim

'A very quick and easy method using the base itself with no added sand, can create a quick but effective base. However, bases must be completely flat without the 'dimple' that current GW bases have'

I was thinking of experimenting with sand and white paint to make a winter base, but I was doing it to be cheap and not buy the modelling snow. Speaking of which, what's your opinion of the modelling snow, Cosmic?

Hi Pyro, I suggest against just White paint and sand. Although it's very cheap, there are better ways to make snow for basically nothing that give you a much better result. For example, the 'winter plains' bases at the top of the page use crushed Rock-Salt. You can buy this in any supermarket and if you buy a cheap brand you could probably get it for 99p and in large quantities.

Depending on how fine you crush it and how much PVA glue you apply to the base, you can either get a thick 'snowfall' look, or a thin 'frost' effect

The actual modelling snow is what I believe 3ff3ct uses mixed with PVA glue, so you'll have to ask him for a more ellaborate opinion of it, however I do have some of his bases and the snow looks good. It looks fluffy and freshly fallen, but what I've found that is that it can stain quite easily, a dirty thumbprint can show up very quickly.

A combination of the rock salt/pva mix with a dusting of snow flock could work pretty well, although I've not tried it myself.

Unless it's just me, the basic pavement base might be difficult to do in the future for 25 mm solid bases. Lately, all of the 25 mm solid bases I've been getting have had a huge divot with a lump in them, which would have to be both trimmed down and then filled in to make a smooth surface...

I'm not certain Trooper but I think they have had both types for years The ones that don't have the bobble seem to be the ones they have cast in fours joined by a cross.

I seem to get a mix of bases in different boxes, but 25mm completely flat bases areb't too hard to get hold of

Defiance Games sells 25mm bases that look to 40k standard sizes. They are divot free

Yeah, the divot and lump phenomenon is only something I've noticed in the past year or so, and now to think of it they are in the sets of four bases joined by sprue... Obviously, GW has redirected whatever quality control that used to exist for the sets of four bases to the Finecast production lines!

Wait, one problem I could see with using rock salt: What if someone spilt liquid on my guardsmen? I don't want the basing I do to simply melt away, especially since my Guardsmen are near my bedroom window and it often rains here.

I hadn't thought about that. Sealing it with Varnish may do the trick, but no guarantees. Or mix it with PVA glue.
