ok gents, so i finaly whent out and bought the Manticore/deathstrike kit ;D. now the only thing i'm having trouble with, is wich one of these bodacius models to make? I can see why you would want a manticore, more shots, much more dependable. and the Deathstrike, its got the rule of cool on its side, and its AP1 so no armour saves unlike the manticore. I would get the deathstrikem because my one opponent has a habit of taking a techmarine and throwing him in a building with a conversion beam and like 20 scouts and 2 dreads, giving all a 3+ cover save. But with the Deathstrike, he dont get a cover save str10 and AP1 should take out that bunker. the manticore has the large tempaltes going for it, and the deathstrike just gets little ones. but that AP value sure helps so message board, what are your opinions?

If you play with friends mostly just build the Manticore and and use it as a 'counts as' Deathstrike when you want to. Or vice versa. Or build which ever one you think will be more fun. It takes fun to keep you in the hobby and if you think a DS(for example) would be awesome then build one. I will add; that tactically most players will ignore the DS yet dedicate units against the Manticore. I mean seriously...one shot with a BS of three and a variable blast radius as well.?!?!?! The DeathStrike is goofy and ridiculous and unreliable, occasionally devastating but often mediocre.
The Manticore, on the other hand, is a rock solid BeatStick Unit. At this point, I have trouble conceiving of running a "traditional" Guard List competitively without at least one.

Even though I don't like the model... I would have to agree with the above comments ;D

i might go with the Deathstrike. my one freinds who plays orks said he'll give me 3 or 4 grots, so we can hoko chains to the missle and hook the grots to it.

I have to say manticore, because of the ridiculous amount of damage it can consistently put out, as opposed to the heavily luck based deathstrike.

If you play with friends who will let you count as then build the one that rocks you aesthetic box.

I went death strike. Not so much because of the rules, but because I like the model better. I also only lay with friends, and when I finally get round to fielding it, I will take more satisfaction of it causing devastation when luck roles my way.
If I played competitive, I would role with the manticore.

The main problem with the deathstrike is not its one shot, it's how long it takes to fire. You only have a 50/50 chance on turn 3 for it to fire, and that's without anything bad happening to it. When it does fire, though, it's devastating.

The solution is to get 3. Redundancy.

Build it as a Deathstrike, and then get the Forge World Manticore...

Build it as a Deathstrike, and then get the Forge World Manticore... I actually prefer the GW version of the Manticore. I think that's just because it resembles the Epic version, which was the first I saw, but it still holds.

The forge world manticore has a turret. The GW one doesn't. What gives?

The forge world manticore has a turret. The GW one doesn't. What gives? And that's why I like the FW Manticore better, it can rotate the turret to fire at targets all over the place, whereas the GW kit would have to move it's hull, and potentially put itself out of cover to fire in a different arc. <.< >.> Of course, I have yet to actually finish building and painting my FW Manticore kit...

Well, remember, it's really not designed (fluff-wise) to be used at 40K engagement distances. If used near the limit of it's range*, the 45 degree arc of a Fixed Weapon System still covers just over a 7 1/2 foot wide area, more than the length of most Tables. And turning it really doesn't matter at that Range, because basically nothing else has enough Range to hit back.
So the design on the GW one makes perfect sense when you look at what it's supposed to do fluff-wise. The problem is just that in 40K, we're shoehorning a long-range Artillery piece into Firefights.
*The old Epic version actually had an even longer range, which would have translated into almost 17 Feet in regular 40K scale ;D

If you're facing hordes (such as those pesky greenskins) I would say the manticore.
I, like many others, likes the look and fluff of the DS, but the drawbacks has allready been mentioned. But I think I like the look of the manticore even more... Most opponents will be scared sh*tless when they see it.
One last argument for the manticore: 700p of eldar killed in one round of shooting, including an avatar. 'Nough said.
