So, the LFGS had a bring and battle today. I had misunderstood the rules so I brough a 750 and a 500 points list and I thought I would be playing a match of that size. Turns out it would be a mixed battle with about equal points on both sides. Also, I forgot to bring my camera.
I ended up allied Tyranids against Eldar, Orks and Space Marines.
We had
CCS with missile launcher
PCS
4 flamers, commander with Power Fist in a chimera with ML + HF
Squad 1 GL + AC
Squad 2 GL + AC in a chimera
Veteran squad
Harker, 3 GL and AC
Scout Sentinel with ML
Hellhound with Inferno Cannon and HHF
Leman Russ with LC and SHB
The nid player had a huge brood of genestealers with brood lord, a spore mine shooting thingy, a psyker thingy and a megahuge something that gave birth to small shooty things (termagaunts?).
Our opponents had a dethkopta, deffdredd, warbozz with nobs, a loota mob and some 'ard boys. They also had a squad of tac marines, CC termies with chaplain in a land raider, some kind of Eldar HQ, a warwalker, a viper and an eldar squad in a wave serpent.
The battlefield was kinda large and covered with forests that very mostly giving cover but not dangerous terrain which means that more or less every shot during the entire battle gave a cover save.
All in all it was a really fun game. We got to chose sides (and kept the initiative). Harper and his squad had deployed far ahead on our left flank facing the hard boys, lootas, tac marines and a deff dredd. To help him he had the genestealers and in the back the hellhound and a inf. squad (on foot).
Most of the game looked pretty much the same. We shoot a bunch of them, they shot a bunch of us, the huge spawny bug spawned stuff (over 30 young ones in three rounds, that one heck of a uterus!), the genestealer kept on running towards the ork lootas and the deffdredd kept slogging through the terrain to try and get to harper and his Chosen Men.
Which he finally did on turn three only to be immobilized by the krak grenades and turn by turn it had all of its claws ripped off until it was finally wrecked. A damn fine performance by my veterans I must say.
Other highlights included my Russ getting blown up the very first turn, the Zoanthorpe and Land Raider deperatly trying to harm each other (I have never seen so many 1s and 2s rolled for wounding/penetration!).
The Termies (Storm Shield+ Thunderhammer and Dual Lightning Claws) were also a horrible, entertaining sight to see. They managed to soak up more than one hundred attacks in one turn(!) and two of three of them were still standing at the end of the battle.
Marbo also deserves an honourable mention as he popped up behind the tac squad and blew up five of them (it would have been more but they were in a building on different floors). He actually survived the return fire (both their plasma cannon and plasma rifle overheated, killing the plasma rifle marine). I actually forgot to use him the following turn but it didn't matter since everything close by would soon be eaten by the genestealers anyway.
Afterwards I found out that our opponents actually had about 150 points more than us (in a 1500-ish points battle) but it didn't matter since I had a great time anyway.
I played a trio of teenagers who probably had a lot more experience than I had (this being my first 5th ed game and first ever game with guardsmen) and they were good to play against despite a habit of measuring their movement and shooting ranges a bit optimistic.
Lessons learnt. Harper rules. Or rather, veterans rule since his special rules didn't contribute that much. Three special weapons and krak grenades are incredible though. At least as long as you stay in cover while being assaulted.
Marbo is fun, but unreliable. I had some really good luck with my dice roll for him (rolling a scatter of 5, negated by his BS) and killed five out of six marines hit by the blast.
Even though terminators should statistically roll at least a few 1s when saving a dozen wound chances are they probably won't. Therefor it is always a good idea to bring some can openers. I had thought I would be playing against similarily sized opponents so I hadn't really brought any anti-tank or anti-termie weaponry which probably would have caused a lot fo grief if the game hadn't finished by turn 5.
