I'm doing a Anglo-Zulu British army (see New regiment reporting) and I'm going to do desert base..
Sand is no problem but I'm thinking like a dry earth look with loose sand and perhaps a little dead grass... Amy advice?
My thoughts... Brown thick coat and dry fast to make it crack (giving a hot baked mud look) then drybruss desert yellow and add bits of static grass in places... Will it work, how to make the paint crack?

Have a look at Cosmic's Basing Encyclopedia (patent pending) I think it's got some desert bases on there

I've based my Necrons on desert style bases. Basically I glue gardening sand onto the base with PVA glue. Once the sand is set, I then hit the base with a coat or two of Tausept Ochre, followed by a fairly heavy dry brush of Bleached Bone, and then another dry brush of skull white.
Check out my picture thread (link in my signature) and you can see how they turn out.

Spot on... Yeah... When I worked at GW the manager made us do ALL bases like that. Might work good! Thanks

You're welcome. I bet you could make them spiffy by adding brown static grass as random tufts.

If you want a large pattern dry/cracked earth, it will take a bit more work and it must be done before attaching the models to the base. Take thin plasticard and cut disks to size to fit the top. Next cut the disks apart in the desired crackle pattern and space appropriately on the base to leave cracks, sand down the edges to bring it all together in a nice clean base, coat with fine sand and paint.

Oh man! That is such a good and easy plan! But I've put my models on... Pap!
