If i have a squadron of three Russes and i pop smoke on the one closest to the enemy therefore blocking line of site to the other two do they all get the obscured rule (see diagram ).
(enemy) (L/R)smoke (L/R) (L/R)

You'd only have 33.34% of you squadron obscured then.. (rules says that a minimum of 50% needs to be obscured) Squadrons don't grant members of the same squadron cover, same as infantry models in 1 unit dosn't grant cover to "themself".. Now a Squadron of 2 Leman Russ, where only 1 popped smoke.. Now that is a whole different talk..

Surely if the three tanks are in a column then the two behind the first would be in cover anyway regardless of smoke. Just my opinion.

Back off mate, or at least be civil about it..
English isn't my main language, I speak German, Danish, Bulgarian and English, and if my slender grasp on english gramma makes my posts illegible, then I apoligize to the topic holder, if the meaning of my post wasn't clear, i'd be more than willing to try and rephrase it..
RT: Now do the decent thing next time and send me a PM with you very constructive criticism, then I promise that I will amend my gramma errors..
Kras..

Not sure if that rant was at me or RT but if it was at me I'd like to say wasn't trying to be an arse it was a general question based on my take on things, I unfortunately don't play so don't know the rules. If it was at RT then never mind

Ahh Foster, it wasn't intended at you.. I felt that the tone of RT's post where injust, so didn't reply on your post..
On your post; Yes seen from a real world perspective it does make perfect sense (and is a tactic used by armored columns) sadly 40K dosn't follow this, (personally i think it is for simplicities sake) and the wording in the rules state that Squadrons dosn't grant themselves cover..
I don't have the main rule book with me at the moment, so i can't refer you to a page number..:/

I think RT was simply trying to point out that squadrons don't give cover to themselves, quoting Kras to agree with him. Of course, he did it in his usual warm and fuzzy way, slightly confusing people. I could be wrong but that is how I read it.
Anyway, three russes in a squadron are usually a bit much anyway. I know the two in a squad and smoking one works but I would rather just have the extra firepower.
Edit: Maybe he was just commenting on your grammar, I can't really tell. Stupid internet and the difficulty in conveying tone...

I see it from all sides. If you can't see the tank as the other is in the way then surly it can't be shot at and so the nearest must be fired apon. And if it has popped smoke you get your cover save. In real life tank units do this tactic and so it would be nice to include it.
However, it's one unit and just like a unit of men you don't get cover from one another.
Must say, the tactic of two does intrest me! One can fore and one can smoke then swap! Also it works in your advantage as if the one nearest your enemy has not smoked it still receives the benefit and can fire as normal.
In brief... No you can't Charron it aint based on LOS in units but this can work to your advantage as the nearest one can fire and the other two (or 1 if you only have two) can fire smoke giving him cover.

Just for ease of discussion, the squadron cover rules are on page 64.
