::Getting Started with Chaos::
So you want to start collecting Chaos Space Marines? Are you not sure where to start? Well Fear not! As this post has been designed for you, the newcomer to the Dark Powers! Read this with care, accept the damning words you see before you, and prosper in the name of the Dark Gods!
**********
What do I need first?
Well the first, and most important thing you will need first is the Codex. Whenever you start a new army the first thing you need is the Codex, it is the ultimate guide in showing you of what the army is, how it performs, the varying Legions & Cults, the units and most importantly the rules for that race.
You can purchase Codex Chaos Space Marines from any GW store, independent Stockist or the GW Website.
More details of Codex Chaos Space Marines can be found here.
Unsure on which Legion/Cult to collect?
If you do not know which Legion or Cult to collect pick the one that you like the most. Perhaps you like the models for that Legion? Perhaps you like how the Legion would perform on the battlefield? Or maybe you like the background behind them?
Picking a Legion/Cult is always hard, I know personally that coming to a decision can be difficult, but I have created a thread that simplifies this, it is an Introduction to the Cults & Legions of Chaos and from there you should be able to make a decision.
Here is the link to: Introduction to the Cults & Legions of Chaos.
Which units should I buy? Where should I start?
So lets assume that you have decided to collect Black Legion, they are the easiest to get started with and although I could go through every Legion, it would be tiring and time consuming. So now that you have decided to collect Black Legion, where should you start?
Well Combat Patrol is the best place to start off, it is set at 400pts meaning that you don't have to go out and buy loads of models, and Combat Patrol is a simple, easy way of easing you into the army. Then once you feel confident in 400pts you can begin to expand and increase your armies points limit to 750pts.
Here is an example of a 400pts Black Legion force:
Troops
Chaos Space Marines Squad = 185pts
Aspiring Champion - Bolt Pistol, power weapon, daemonic strength.
1 Chaos Marine - Meltagun
1 Chaos Marine - Flamer
5 Chaos Marines - Bolters
(All have the Infiltrate veteran Skill)
Chaos Space Marines Squad = 165pts
Aspiring Champion - Bolt Pistol, power weapon, daemonic strength.
1 Chaos Marine - Plasmagun
1 Chaos Marine - Meltagun
5 Chaos Marines - Bolters
Chaos Rhino = 50pts
Combi-Bolter
This example list is, personally, a very good list to start with. Combining mobility with infiltration makes sure your Chaos Marines get up close and personal. You don't have to follow this list, this is just purely an example of what a typical 400pts Chaos army would be like.
I have bought my models, but how should I paint them?
Well it is totally your decision, it all depends on which Legion you are doing and that Legions colour scheme. The Codex gives good examples of the Legions colour schemes, but if you are stuck on how to paint them GW created step by step guides on painting the following Legions:
Black Legion
World Eaters
Death Guard
Emperor's Children
Thousand Sons
What's next?
Once you have earned your stripes at 400pts, you will want to expand your force and add more units. The best way is to go to 750pts. When you play at 750pts you need 1 HQ and 2 Troops, these are compulsory so you must take them! So from the 400pt example list I created you could add perhaps a couple of obliteratots, or some possessed chaos marines, maybe a defiler. It is totally your decision here, just choose the units you like, experiment with your army get a feel for them and then add more elite units to your army, and within no time you will become a feared Chaos Lord!
