Hey all,
So Empirespy and I got together for a game today, and we decided to play a Battle Missions scenario, coming up with 'War of Attrition.' I would field my Chaos Guard, and Empire would borrow my marines, at 1900 points each.
Now us being us, we decided to throw in some other factors. Namely a Baneblade that would drive about shooting at whatever it was closest to. This was quite important, as any unit killed by the baneblade would nullify any victory points from that squad; no one would claim them.
A rough guide to the lists was...
Renegades: (me)
CCS
A Priest
Primaris Pysker
2 large-ish platoons- one assault and one gunline with 2 HWSs, with one flamer PCS in a centaur.
2 Veteran squads- one melta in a Chimera and one plasma on foot.
2 sentinels
A leman Russ Exterminator and Demolisher
A Medusa
Marines: (empire)
An Inquistor and his retinue, (just because).
A Terminator Chaplain with 5 assault Termies all in a Redeemer.
A 10 man tactical squad- COmbat squadded, with the 'spear' unit in a Rhino.
A 5 man combat squad in a Rhino.
5 scout snipers.
5 Sternguard in a Razorback.
The mission was war of attrition, which is basically a fight to the death with all destroyed troops choices being cycled back into the reserves. Throughout the game I managed to forget about my officer of the fleet, except to fire his pistol once, so fail there. I also brought back my Priest by mistake, sorry Empire!
So we deployed using table halves, empire setting up very close to me with his Inquisitor, Landraider mini deathstar and Rhino squad on my right, scouts in the centre, and the other tactical squad on my right with the Sternguard.
I placed my gunline platoon, veteran squads, command squad and Demolisher on my right, with my Exterminator, Medusa, Assault platoon and a Missile HWS on my left. The Baneblade set up more or less in the centre of the board.
Inquisitorial retinue.
The view from the turret of the Baneblade.
I got the first turn, moving up my flamer PCS accompanied by the Primaris up in their Centaur to threaten the Inquisitorial retinue. I also moved up my assault platoon towards Empire's Rhino on the left.
During my shooting I managed to wipe out the Inquisitor and his retinue and destroy the razorback containing the Sternguard, which were subsequently pinned. Both my veteran sqauds and my Demolisher fired on the Landraider...and shook it. I also shook the Rhino on my
right with something. My assault blob with priest destroyed another Rhino on the charge. The Medusa also managed to knock a structure point off the Baneblade.
Traitor Guardsmen surge forward to attack the Rhino.
The 'right battle' after my first turn.
Empire responded by moving up with his Landraider and disgorging the Terminators. The Landraider fired on and destroyed the melta veteran's Chimera, destroying it and killing three men in the blast. Ther Terminators multi-charged my gunline blob and my Demolisher, blowing up the Demolisher and killing most of the Guardsmen, while weathering all of my blows. On the left the combat squad that had lost their Rhino flamed my powerblob and waded in, killing two for know losses in return. The commissars ensured that the line was held.
The right flank after the Terminator's charge.
The marines enter the fray.
Then the Baneblade has its 'turn.' It moved forwards towards the scouts and killedt them all, also firing into the terminaro fight, killing a guardsman, and a terminator, where all my men had failed...
In my second turn, the melta veterans turned the ladraider into so much molten slag, while the Company Command squad ran away from the Terminators. In close combat the last of my gunline squad were butchered, but my assault platoon kept holding off the marines, with help from a generous scatter by the Medusa. My sentinels also arrived, outflanking to charge the 'shield' combat squad that was deployed on a hill.
In his turn, Empire wiped out my melta veterans with his Terminators in a brief but violent melee. The Sternguard destroyed the Exterminator, but his combat squad were finally cut down by my assault platoon. The baneblade turned around and fired into the Sentinel/marine fight, where so far nothing had happened, and killed them all. It also wiped out the Sternguard. (I think).
The Sternguard, shortly before their demise.
In my turn, I repositioned my assault squad to give them cover from the Baneblade, then fired everything I had at the Terminators. All the firepower of my right flank, was just about sufficient to bring them down. I believe that something destroyed the Rhino on the right flank at this point.
The Terminators, about to rush my gunline...
Half an armies worth of massed firepower later...
In Empire's turn, he ran the recently disembarked combat squad at my Centaur, but failed to damage it with grenades. His scout squad re-appeared, and took up position in the woods at the back of his lines. He also brought back the two dead combat squads, one of which fired on my assault squad while the other charged. Needless to say it was something of a massacre, with only the commissar and the priest left alive at the end.
Much needed reinforcements arrive.
The baneblade then had its turn, deciding to fire on the marines that were fighting the assault platoon. The subsequent firepower only killed a couple of marines, but crucially it cut down both of my men; denying Empire the victory points for those units.
After turn four, the game began to descend into a convoluted version of 'whack-a-mole,' on the left flank in particular. A unit of mine would arrive, and make a mess of Empire's units, only for another unit of Empire's to turn up and kill mine. Eventually at the end of turn six a very depleted assault platoon was left facing a single marine with a plasma cannon.
Renegade reinforcements sweep all before them...
Only to be embroiled in another desperate melee.
Meanwhile, in the centre my Medua and Missile launcher squad were able to destroy the Baneblade, (unfortunately it didn't explode). On the right flank I gunned down the combat squad and the newly arrived scouts with heavy bolters, only for the scouts to come back next turn and take up the same position again! I began to move my gunline platoon, (it had returned since its death at the hands of the Terminators) to support my left flank, although they never arrived in time. I also swung my flamer/primaris PCS in the Centaur around to threaten Empire's third 'shield' combat squad, which had once again taken up position on a hill in his backfield.
The Baneblade is destroyed by Renegade guns.
By rights the game should have ended at the end of turn six, but we decided to play on, mainly to find out what would happen to Empire's lone plasma cannoneer. Remarkably he managed to survive a lightning arc, pistol shots and stubber rounds, and also two bastion breacher shells. He went on to kill four guardsmen with a single shot, including two sergeants of the three who had distinguished themselves a turn before, cutting down five marines in one round of combat.
Empire's plasma cannoneer sees of all comers.
In his final turn, Empire also brought two combat squads back, attacking my heavy bolter squad on the right. Unfortunately for him his shooting was abysmal, and to make matters worse the remaining men fled, so Empire couldn't assault them and get any victory points. (They were still on the board when the game ended).
So at the end of the game, I had about 1700 victory points to Empire's 900, leaving me the winner! Good game to Empirespy, he was unlucky where he lost valuble units too the Baneblade more so than me, and then had victory points denied to him as well. Regardless it was a great battle with a lot of random carnage, and much fun was had by both of us!
The remaining marines are forced to withdraw as the renegade hordes cliam the field.
Thanks for reading!
