I played a first game with a Leman Russ Executioner last night and was, shall we say, very underwhelmed with the results. In turn 1, it got some lucky scatters and killed 5 Assault Marines but also suffered a glancing hit due to rolling a 1 for gets hot followed by a <4. In turn 2, it suffered 2 more glancing hits due to more Gets Hot rolls and promptly died. 245 points destroyed without the enemy firing a shot at it.
So is it worth taking such an expensive tank now that it is capable of killing itself and relies on small blast templates? I prefer to stick with much cheaper LRMBTs as a rule.

The staff in my local store told me it wasn't worth it unless you wanted a daredevil light tank and infantry killer. I reccommend the regular LMRBT tbh

The executioner cannon itself does not suffer Gets Hot! So the tank may change slightly in its typical loadout, as the sponson cannons do suffer the problem of melting the tank now.

I didn't realise that the main gun was not affected; 2 of the glancing hits came from that weapon!

Yeah, even tho it's still a Plasma Weapon in fluff, it doesn't actually have the Gets Hot Rule, so firing the Turret is safe. On average, if you're firing everything every Turn, it works out to losing roughly 1 Hull Point per Game from the Sponsons overheating.
Or you can just go with the Sponsonless version, keep it cheaper, safer, and more mobile.

The Executioner is still good, IMO, but I think the Demolisher got markedly better for filling the roles I'd usually put the Executioner in. Mainly scaring off things like Terminators. A good roll probably won't do as much damage as 5 good rolls with an Executioner toting plasma sponsons, but it is far safer and way more reliable against vehicles than it once was.
Plasma sponsons got a pretty severe nerf in this edition, since blast and template weapons that Gets Hot! now don't fire, in addition to suffering a wound/glance. That really, really stinks.

I still think its a good tank, if a little pricey with Plasma Sponsons
However with 6th, i think I'm going to be running HB
It really depends what/who your playing, Vs MEQ its still gonna chew em thru like butter!

IMO - I have never liked the Executioner. I think its over rated, and over priced.
Give me a demolisher anyday.

IMO - I have never liked the Executioner. I think its over rated, and over priced. Give me a demolisher anyday. As far as putting out a lot of hurt the Executioners 36" range means its generally going to have a few turns of firing before the enemies going to be on it. Plus x3 Blast S7 AP2 hits will/can put multiple wounds down on MC and MEQ Squads, which it did in my last game killing a Tyrant Guard in one turn and then taking 2 wounds off the Swarmalord in the next. A demolisher woundn't have been able to do this as its only throwing out 1 large blast per turn at 24" range. That extra range and templates mean even terminators will be worried by it as well a vehicles. This lack of range means that you will have to go out hunting and move, if you leave it on its own it will be assaulted and blown to shreds, if you take troops out to guard it they will be cut to shreds and then the tank will be assaulted! Yes its expensive, and the plasma sponsons got nerfed in 6th whch makes them a bit risky, so just run it barebones and its A MYSTERIOUS SUM OF POINTS WHICH I WILL NOT DIVULGE HERE! If you want to have a S10 template withh better range, go for the Medusa and with its baston breacher shells (although with the smaller balst template) have a better range. Plus the Medusa is cheaper than the Demolisher The Demolisher is an excellent anti-troop tank, but the Executioner can do so much more! Danger Rod

^ I appricate your view, but your tactics might be different to mine.
IMO the executioner was always overpriced. If it was more like 170pts I think it would be worth it, but not for THAT MYSTERIOUS SUM OF WHICH I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.
The demolisher can do SO much more then the Executioner IMO. Its ordinance for a start, meaning 2D6, pick highest for armour, great for splashing lighter armoured vehicles that are deployed in a tight bunch with its big template.
The medusa is good, I also like to run that for fear factor. But I NEVER take bastion breacher shells, never had a need too. The more pie plates, the better!

I think we do play differently! I like to use mine as a weapon of fear, my last opponent was calling it "the doom tank" all game as it wiped out a tac sqaud first turn with three direct hits! Plus it punished his DS Jump Squad that scattered into view... I love my Executioner

How many people have stopped running 3x PlasmaVets/PCS/CCS squads, because "Oh noes my guys might die"? Protip: If you don't destroy that squad of terminators who just landed in your lines, you're dead next turn anyway.
It's still chucking out 3-5 AP2 templates at a mid-high strength. That's a lotta dakka, and it can deal with monstrous creatures or light vehicles a lot better than a Demolisher can (even a LasPlas Demolisher).

Thats kinda one of the reasons I like the Executioner as it takes away the "Gets Hot" rule from footslogging plasma vets
Its the perfect anethema for terminators...or even Dante

Hey guys, please don't post point values of things in the codex. Games Workshop frowns on that and there is no reason to place a forum we all like in jeopardy.
Thanks.

Remember that combined points values are okay (like the cost of a Russ and sponsons and a dozer blade, etc), but bare bones prices are not. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me. Reds

How many people have stopped running 3x PlasmaVets/PCS/CCS squads, because "Oh noes my guys might die"? . Those are cheap, and thus disposable. They also die off one at a time, while in the wrong circumstances, a single Overheat can entirely finish off an otherwise fully functional 200+ Point Tank.

Are you guys serious? Nothing about the 'gets hot' rule has changed, except it now can hurt vehicles~!
I still run Plasma-vet squads in chimeras. Usually 2x squads of these will easyly do the same damage as an executioner, and will survive MUCH longer. Yes more expensive, but more surviveability.
I just cant justify pumping 200+ points into a leman russ chassis, regardless of the gun. I have used an executioner before, and it didnt really do much more then a demolisher.
