I just thought I would try to work out where my boys came from... this is the back story for the 324th Paradise Regiment, raised in Shangri La. Initially, let me start with the world they come from.
History
Paradise was one of the earliest human colonies outside the Segmentum Solar, initially established in the Dark Age of Technology. The name was chosen to bring colonists to the planet - in fact, even then, it was on the limits of suitability for human habitation. While it is off the beaten track, it is close enough to the core of the Imperium that it was never cut off from Terra, and raised Imperial Army regiments throughout the Crusades. During the Heresy, Paradise declared for the Emperor and provided troops to major conflicts across the galaxy.
In the rush to produce equipment, the planet's resources were hugely depleted and its viability was at risk. To keep the forges running after the Heresy, Paradise sent out ships to scavenge space and return with raw materials; the population was rehoused at the north of the world and the south became a scrapyard. To reduce re-entry losses, the planet's atmosphere was removed by pumping into huge reservoirs under the planet's surface; Paradise is now an airless ball with humanity clinging to its skin, as though they are living on the outside of an enormous spaceship.
Current Situation
Paradise is a minor hive world with three major clusters, Arcadia, Nirvana and Shangri La, located at the nothern pole of the world around a spaceport called Utopia. They are manufacturers of military equipment; Arcadia produces infantry equipment (everything from clothing to lasguns) and Nirvana produces heavier weaponry, while Shangri La produces Chimera hulls and a local Leman Russ version called the Leman Russ KV. Outside these hives there is a semi-nomadic population of miners who live in huge processing vehicles called Behemoths. The Behemoths will spend up to five years in the wastes between visits to the hives and are equipped with solar powered void shields to protect them from radiation and impact. Once the world had been strip mined of all its natural resources, the hives were built to house the population and the planet became an dumping ground for external resources which are dropped into the planet's empty southern hemisphere. These resources, made up of all sorts of natural and unnatural space debris, are mined and thrown back into the furnaces of Paradise.
Military contribution
Each of the hive clusters is required to provide two regiments of Imperial Guard each solar year, with regimental numbers being recycled after 200 years. This means that there are theoretically up to twelve hundred Paradise regiments, though there are rarely more than two hundred active regiments and fewer than eighty at close to full strength. Paradise regiments are infantry regiments, as befits a hive world; as a manufacturing hive world, they are well provided with heavy weapons and vehicles, and trading between the hives ensures that they have integrated heavy support.
