Since MGK has given me the go ahead to come to Sweden I'd like to come as prepared as I can by learning as much Swedish as I can. Here's where you guys come in;
Has anyone on the board learned another language from software such as Rocket(which incidentally does not offer Swedish) or Rosetta Stone?
And what would you recommend?
As always, thank you in advance!
Bonus question(and you thought there wouldn't even be a BONUS question): What seemingly bizarre or strange language should I also learn?

Instant Immersion and Pimsleur. Instant Immersion is a bit better and a heck of a lot cheaper than Rosetta.
Pimsleur is quite nice, but quickly gets to be the most expensive option of all, short of living in a foreign country for long enough to learn the lingo.
Bonus answer: Inuit.

Obviously, there is no substitute for total immersion in a culture that actually speaks the language (as well as an English-(insert language here) dictionary and a grammar textbook), but I have heard good things about Rosetta Stone.
And my answer to the bonus question: Navajo.

Rook, I may be able to get you Rosetta Stone for free. I'm dodgy good like that.

I would say Spanish or French for the bonus. You could get by in a lot of places in Africa or South America with one of them. I imagine Spanish would be useful in many US places too.

Tbh I'd say beyond a few basic things you'll get by fine in Sweden, since everyone (pretty much) speaks really good English (from my experience in Stockholm). If you are intending to learn a language properly you're better off learning one of the big ones; French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic & English.

Thanks for the replies guys! Trickstick: I have no desire to learn French. I am already passable in Spanish considering you hear it everyday in the Phoenix metro area of Arizona where I live. Billboards, radio stations, grocery adds in the mail, etc...all in Spanish. The Bonus language is something just to occupy my time. I have been told that I pic up languages easily and quickly. Maybe I could earn a living with it. I don't see Basque or Txt Spk as being too helpful but they certainly did qualify for what I was asking for. LOL Navajo and Inuit are both FANTASTIC suggestions. As is Afrikaans I guess. Seeing as we have a huge American Indian culture here in AZ I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find someone to speak to in Navajo. Inuit...perhaps I could get a job working up north translating. I like survival situations(as some of you may remember) and such, perhaps I could parley it into a career. Afrikaans seems very close to German(which I have some knowledge of) but I have no real desire to go to that part of the globe. If I were really looking into using the Bonus Lang as an employment opportunity it would be nearly impossible to beat Chinese(Mandarin, Cantonese) and Japanese. But Kanji seems very difficult to learn. Maybe I'm wrong. In either case, thanks again for the suggestions guys! I may just say fornicate it! and learn Klingon.

When I was in Europe, I spent a while hanging with a guy from South Africa. One night, there were also a couple of Dutch guys at the Hostel, and he could understand pretty much all of their Dutch, but they could barely get one word in 5 of his Afrikaans. I could get about a quarter of the Dutch because my German was pretty good then, but couldn't understand any of his Afrikaans, really. The relationships between languages are cool

I hated learning French, I could never tell when one word ended and another began. I should have guessed you would have passable Spanish.
More people speak Klingon than a lot of real world languages. I'm guessing there are less Cornish speakers than Klingon speakers.

Klingon is easy.
If you want something interesting just to use up time, learn every dialect of English.

I think Russian, because it together with German will open up eastern Europe and Russia for you to travel in. There are some real cultural treasures to go visit on the east side of the baltic that I guess you would find interesting. With knowledge in the language you will be able to leave the ordinary tourist streaks and find the real gems.

Bonus: Maori! Probably one of the most useless languages in the world, outside of here in NZ. Even then... French would be good, but maybe I'm biased since I chose to learn it in school (and still am learning it in school). Personally, if I had a choice to learn any language it'd be Russian. I absolutely love the sound of it, and I often bug my Russian friend to teach me things in Russian. Learn Russian!

Russian would be easier than Chinese ; learning the Cyrillic alphabet will be the hardest hurdle.

OK, So I may have decided.
Russian(my friend is already fluent in it so this may be a huge benefit).
After a little Swedish by the way.
