Hi, I'm going to be adding a lot more infantry to my Guard army in the next few months and one idea I've had is an assault platoon who will be sent forward to die horribly. Basically I'm planning on loading it up with Meltas, Flamers and power weapons and then sending into the fray while the rest of the army provides fire support. Anyone got any ideas on the best way to equip it and what size it should be?

Might wanna put in some krak grenades too, not many, but enough to be able to hurt AV12 walkers and help against MC's..

It will be expensive and die a nasty quick death....but could be heaps of fun!

I'd go with 4 Squads, 2-3 Commissars, Power Axes and Meltabombs all around. Flamers are probably your Weapon of Choice for this in 6th Ed, but something like 3 Melta, 1 Flamer could be workable as well.
5 full Squads gets seriously unwieldy, but I've found 3 to get cut down a little too quickly sometimes. 4 seems to be the sweet spot for me.
Alternately, if you're into Allies, replace the Commissars with a Rune Priest. He gives them CounterAttack, Ld10, and ATSKNF instead of Stubborn, which is a pretty good tradeoff for a Platoon that's not going to be hugging a Board Edge. He's also a lot harder to kill than a Commissar, between his generally better statline and his 2+LOS!. Divination is generally the way to go with a Rune Priest, but Biomancy might be worth considering in this case.

why not take a wolf priest then? prefered enemy certainly helps out an assault unit!

I frequently run an assault platoon with 3 combined squads and 3 commissar with a total of 6 power weapons.
It usually suffers a lot of damage and is often whittled down too quickly to still hold an objective at the end of the game, though admittedly I need to practice a little more caution in its useage.
I have had fun beating my friends striking scorpions by baiting him to assault my platoon and then winnning through attrition.
I follow the assault platoon with a platoon command squad that has flamers in, sometimes I put flamers in the combined unit but often just field it without since they will run nearly every turn.
I've tried a larger melta platoon with 4 combined squads with melta, but haven't really used it enough to have conclusive results - one discovery is melta do draw a lot more atttention than flamers / power weapons!
If you are playing spearhead there is the infantry spearhead which gives an assault platoon some cool stuff.
The world of allies is a huge and confusing spectrum, so I won't advise there!
PS.. for your own morale I'd paint a platoon standard and give it to one of the men, it confers no rules, buffs or benefit other than aesthetic but it looks really cool to have a flag amid a bunch of suicidal / inspired men charging headlong into the fray.

why not take a wolf priest then? prefered enemy certainly helps out an assault unit! Presience helps more most of the time. Rune Priest also brings the second-best Psychic Defense in the Game. I'd also rather have the Force Axe than the Power Maul most of the time. The main argument in favour of the Wolf Priest is actually his ability to take the Saga of the Hunter, pulling off the same trick that got FAQed away from the Stealth Pants Commissar and letting them Outflank on top of it. I might have to give that a try at some point.

doh! forgot that presience works on CC as well! the outflanking platoon+wolfpriest sounds like a nasty tactic though! guess i'll need to try that one as well!

I like some of these suggestions. Really thought out and pretty effective. My advice: Vet squad with the greindier doct. I don't really know how but it seems every time I play these guys against SM tact squads or Devastion squads they seem to wipe the floor with Astarte Blood, Though I'd advise whittling the enemy down first before assaulting.
