I like to make themed sets of scenery - I have a 'Grassy planet' box with a green cloth, hills, craters, woods, barricades and similar, and a 'Mechanicum' box with a red cloth, mechanical hills, huge cogs, gears, craters and an abandoned tunneller. The third box is going to be 'The Governer's Residence', so if anyone has thoughts for scenery, I would be interested. Once again, it will be sitting on a green cloth, so I guess I'm looking at the grounds rather than the residence itself. The current list of ideas reads like this: - Ornamental flowerbeds
- A maze made from hedges.
- A memorial - about 3" high with a bronze Leman Russ on the top
- A small summerhouse.
Thoughts, please?

How about some statues of previous governors in fancy wargear, perhaps fronting some steps that lead up to the very front of the mansion, which is all that you can see of it. And a large ornamental pond, just because.

I think the empire greatswords would make for some lovely archaic statues!

The old metallic senior officer miniature. Painted as a marble statue and on a nice piedestal. Perhaps in a fountain. By building it on a nice base you can move it around every game.

Some of those ceremonial sentry boxes that are made of wood.

2nd Ed Starter Box Marines make great statues if you can find them. They still show up every now and then, usually dirt cheap, because they suck as Gaming Models. A haha might be worth it if you can work in the elevation change. It's a hedge or low wall with a ditch on the far side from where the owner of the house will see it from. Keeps the riffraff out without spoiling the view or looking like a security fence. Also makes for a pretty good defensive position, especially with a wall instead of a hedge at the top. A Gazebo, maybe?

Escape hatch coming up in the "grounds" somewhere? That, and a barbecue.

If you have any of those old horrible one-pose space marines that came with the paint set you can use those as statues. I made an objective marker out of one. Basecoat it with jade green or other dark green, then build up layers of of gold/bronze metals (drybrushing works wonders). Finish with a wash of some kind and paint the base to look like marble. It looks perfect as a bronze statue that has been standing around for ages. Add moss on the base and other suitable places. Maybe some bird sh*t as well. You could also have a huge lawn where the grass is cut as a Chess board. (Have conscripts and/or penal legioneers play live Chess, with real weapons.) Also you need a HUGE flag pole proudly displaying the banner of the Imperium (or your local regiment).

I once made a statue in a pond with a movement tray, a rock, a strip of thin card and a mono pose Fantasy Empire spearman.
Now, as far as governors go, use lots of purple. Purple is THE prime rich guy colour. Make banners, tons of banners, showing the coat of arms of the governer, the planet and of course the eagle.
I second egon in that you need a lawn. Maybe not with a living chess set, but a spaceous lawn.
I am thinking of a huge house with lawn in front, with a huge gate in front. You could possibly use the Garden of Morr walls. Heck, you could even use their tombs for smaller buildings. Make sure you add a gazebo, too. Gazebos are magical.
You should also add troopers standing guard. It adds character.

Speaking of Morr (and this was probably what was being implied anyway) but a family crypt and/or shrine would make sense.
