What are your opinions and thoughts on the Leman Russ Exterminator? I want to use it as it looks quite nice but am a bit unsure about its damage potential compared to its cost. It doesn't have the Ordnance rule for hurting vehicles and the AP4 will be laughed at by MEQ infantry. Is there a role for it that a standard Leman Russ Battle Tank does not do better?

Its great for chewing thru Dreadnoughts, DE, Nercrons and low Armour tanks.
Not a bad tank overall, its just we have other tanks which can do its job better (ie the Vanilla Russ)
And as you said, now the rules for Ordnance and using the full template have changed in 6th, I expect we will start to see less of them

Its great for chewing thru Dreadnoughts, DE, Nercrons and low Armour tanks. Are you sure about that? Against Dreadnoughts' front armour, of the two shots that will mathematically hit, it would still require a 5+ to even glance it. Necron infantry would take a full armour save and both DE and Necron vehicles will still be taking advantage of a 5+ Jink cover save.

Not Dreads so much, but it's a pretty good can opener. First off, you mathematically get 3 Hits on average, because it's twin-linked. The Heavy Bolters can also strip Hull Points off AV10-11, and are reasonably likely to take at least one. It'll do 2-3 Hull Points per Turn to AV11. 3-4 HP to AV10 on average, which will often drop a Raider, even with Jink and Night Shields.
It's excellent against many Necron Units, since most of them only have a 4+ Save now, so it takes that away. Once you've got the Quantum Shields down on their other Vehicles, it's really good at finishing them off.
It's total damage output against Marines isn't great (~2 per Turn), but because it's all about volume of fire, it will do better than average more often than you think, and forcing a lot of Saves is good for overwhelming Units that are trying to use LOS! to shift Wounds around.
With the Twin-Linking and the volume of fire from the Heavy Bolters, it's also OK at going after the lighter Flyers. Nothing to rely on, but a potentially useful extra tool in the box.

Fair enough, I forgot about Necrons' 4+ armour save in the new codex. In fairness, I don't tend to use sponsoon weapons, prefering to take the cheaper pintle-mounted Heavy Stubber; it's a little better at cracking light vehicles, has a 360° firing arc and, 9 times out of 10, my tanks are never in a position for both sponsoons to be able to fire anyway.

Heavy Bolter Sponsons are a much better option in 6th. You can move and still fire to some effect, they help protect your main gun from Weapon Destroyed results because those are randomized now, and that kind of torrent fire is somewhat more effective against lighter Units with generally worse Cover.

Exterminators are transport/light tank/horde busters. The Exterminator itself is a good weapon and with Hydras being partially nerfed by having Skyfire, the Exterminator has become a more important part of the arsenal. As some of the others have mentioned, the randomised weapon destroyed and snapfire rules means your more likely to want Heavy Bolters on then you were before.

As my lists lack a lot of Infantry-based Autocannons (which, as far as I can tell, is considered one of the better [if not best] choices) so an Exterminator as the go-to Russ seemed obvious. It blows up Heavier Infantry and light transports and can slaughter light infantry for some redundancy, which is the niche Autocannons attempt fill so there's not a lot else to say.
I allow for Ordnance weapons to deal with anything more than AV11 for the most part, so if that's your target you're better with a LRBT or Demolisher (or artillery/manticore/Valk)

The Exterminator was also one of the big winners from the last round of FAQs. Changing Lumbering Behemoth to Heavy means it can Move and fire it all, making it much easier to get good use from those Sponsons and making H-Ks and Hull Lascannon more viable.
